Wizards' Wolff Named MLS Player of the Week

October 2, 2006 - Major League Soccer (MLS) News Release

NEW YORK (Oct. 2, 2006) - Kansas City forward Josh Wolff earned Major League Soccer Player of the Week honors for his performance in the Wizards 3-3 draw against Real Salt Lake on Saturday, Sept. 30 in which he scored one goal and tallied two assists.

Wolff opened the scoring in the 5th minute of play when he took a through ball from teammate Davy Arnaud and drilled a shot into the upper right corner of the goal past Real Salt Lake goalkeeper Scott Garlick. After Real Salt Lake took a 2-1 lead, Wolff helped get the Wizards back in the game with an assist on Scott Sealy's goal in the 54th minute to tie the game 2-2. He then began the attack and recorded an assist on Kansas City's third goal, a Jose Burciaga tally in the 63rd minute.

Wolff has scored five goals this season and recorded two assists. He ranks third in on the team in goals behind Sealy and Burciaga. Kansas City sits tied for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference with New York. Each team has 35 points with two games remaining and they face each other on the final day of the regular season.

In his ninth year in MLS, fourth with the Wizards, Wolff has distinguished himself as one of the league's top players. After losing significant playing time due to injuries in 2002 and 2003, Wolff set career highs in 2004 and 2005 for goals and assists. This year he's missed 13 games due to U.S. National Team duty and injury, but has helped keep Kansas City in the playoff hunt. This is Wolff's fifth career Player of the Week award and first this season. He is the third Wizards player to earn the honor this season, joining Scott Sealy and Davy Arnaud.

The Major League Soccer Player of the Week is selected each week of the MLS regular season by a panel of journalists from the Professional Soccer Reporters Association (PSRA).
