Sporting Kansas City News Release
KANSAS CITY, MO (February 19, 2003) - Kansas City Wizards General Manager Curt Johnson announced today that the Wizards organization has surpassed the all-time franchise record of 4,115 season tickets sold with eight weeks remaining until the start of the 2003 home opener. The previous record was set in 1996, the inaugural year of Major League Soccer. The passing of this milestone, on February 14, is a significant step as the Wizards move closer to the current "Match the MLS Best" standard of 7,316 set by the 2002 Columbus Crew.
The honor of breaking the record fell to KCTV 5 who purchased a Wizards "MEDALLION" package last Friday on Valentine's Day. To date the Wizards are second only, among MLS teams, to the Los Angeles Galaxy in the overall number of new season tickets sold for the 2003 season.
"This is a very significant step. We, as an organization, have been working to best that number for over six years so it feels good to blow past it and raise the bar once again," said Johnson. "It's a great feeling to see the growing awareness of the Wizards and feel the momentum of this ticket campaign."
The Wizards currently have 4,431 season tickets accounted for as they work toward the "Match the MLS Best" ticket campaign challenge by Wizards Founder Lamar Hunt. The Wizards organization is also working toward a goal of 1,000 CRUSADERS. Hunt announced the goal to expand the Wizards Booster Club CRUSADERS program in late November. At that time the number of CRUSADERS stood at 22 and in just over two months the number has increased to 622.
"This is fantastic news," said Wizards Head Coach Bob Gansler. "This is going to fuel our players tremendously, they love to play for a crowd and to be assured so many folks will be there is exhilarating."
The Wizards organization is one of Major League Soccer's founding teams and has experienced an increase in attendance in each of the last four MLS seasons. As the Wizards embark on their eighth season of soccer at Arrowhead, the sport continues to grow throughout the Mid-America area.
