Bismarck, ND (Sept. 20, 2005) - The Dakota Wizards selected forward Chuck Hayes with their first round pick (9th overall) in the 2005 Continental Basketball Association draft. Hayes is a 6'6", 242 pound forward from the University of Kentucky. He averaged 11 points and 8 rebounds as a senior. First-year Wizards head coach Dave Bliss said, "We feel that Chuck Hayes, besides being a very talented player, demonstrates a tremendous winning spirit that is both contagious to your team and the people that watch him. Being All-SEC speaks for his playing capabilities, but of all the players in the last four years competing in college athletics, he might have the highest winning percentage."
With their second round pick, the Wizards selected Chris Taft. Taft is a 6'10", 250 pound forward, who played at the University of Pittsburgh. He averaged 13 points, 8 rebounds, and 2 blocks as a senior. He was the second round pick of the Golden State Warriors in the 2005 NBA draft. He is currently in the Warriors training camp without a guaranteed contract. Bliss said, "Coming from a major conference, he is a terrific power player. He has played in an up-tempo system that still plays good defense."
The Wizards took John Reimold, a 6'6" shooting guard from Bowling Green State University, in the third round. He averaged 19 points and 5 rebounds as a senior. Reimold was named second team All-MAC as well as a Mid-Major All-American by CollegeInsider.com. He is a three-point threat, averaging 46% from behind the arc. Remold is a shooter who has a knack for putting the ball in the hoop.
In the fourth round, the Wizards chose Matt Vaughn, a 6-foot point guard. Vaughn played his college ball at Colorado Christian University. He averaged 18 points, 5 assists, and 2 steals a game as a senior. He refined his game in Houston, Texas under the instruction of former NBA player, coach, and executive John Lucas. With their fifth pick, the Wizards took Jeremiah Massey. He is a 6'7", 230 pound forward out of Kansas State. He lead the team in scoring (18) and rebounding (7), while earning second-team All-Big 12 honors. Massey played for the Boston Celtics in the 2005 Reebok Vegas Summer League. In the final round, the Wizards selected Glen McGowen. McGowen is a 6'8", 230 pound forward from Pepperdine University. He led his team in scoring (19) and rebounding (8) as a senior, which led to him being selected as a member of the All-West Coast Conference team.
The Dakota Wizards open their season on the road November 19th against the Sioux Falls Skyforce. Their home opener is on November 25th, when they play host to the Idaho Stampede.
