Sporting Kansas City News Release
NEW YORK, NY (Thursday, October 19, 2006) - Major League Soccer announced today that the Kansas City Wizards are the winners of the Kraft Global Team Fair Play award recognizing the team with the fewest disciplinary points during the course of the regular season. This is the second consecutive season in which the Wizards have received the honor and the fourth time overall.
"This is a tribute to the discipline this team exudes, the integrity to which we play and the respect that we have for the game of soccer," said Wizards head coach Brian Bliss.
The Wizards claimed the Kraft Global Team Fair Play award for accumulating the fewest disciplinary points during the 2006 campaign (353.5 points). Disciplinary points are assigned as follows: one point for each caution point received by a player, 10 points for each red card, 0.50 points for each foul committed, and a reduction of 15 points for every clean game in which a team does not receive either a yellow or red card nor has a player sanctioned by the MLS Disciplinary Committee.
This announcement by the league comes on the heals of Kansas City having both Jimmy Conrad and Jose Luis Burciaga Jr. recognized as finalists for MLS Defender of the Year one day prior. That award will be announced Tuesday, October 24th.
