Roanoke Dazzle News Release
WASHINGTON, DC, December 14 - Washington Wizards President of Basketball Operations Ernie Grunfeld announced today that the team has assigned first-year forward Andray Blatche to the Roanoke Dazzle of the NBA Development League. Roanoke, led by Head Coach Kent Davison, is the Wizards D-League affiliate.
"The D-League will give Andray an outstanding opportunity to get considerable playing time in live-game competition," said Grunfeld.
Blatche is the ninth NBA player to be assigned to a D-League affiliate this season and joins Wizard's teammate Peter John Ramos on the Roanoke roster. Donta Smith of Atlanta and Toronto's Pape Sow are both on assignment to the Arkansas RimRockers. The Milwaukee Bucks have assigned Ersan Ilyasova and the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets designated Sean Banks to Tulsa. The Minnesota Timberwolves have designated center Dwayne Jones and guard Bracey Wright to the Florida Flame. The Phoenix Suns assigned Dijon Thompson to Albuquerque and recalled him after three games with the Thunderbirds.
Blatche, 19, was selected by Washington in the second round (49th overall) of the 2005 NBA Draft. From Henninger High School in Syracuse, NY by way of South Kent Prep (CT), Blatche has appeared in four games for the Wizards this season. He made his NBA debut on November 11 versus Seattle and finished with five points, two assists and one rebound in seven minutes of action. Blatche has scored 11 points and grabbed six rebounds in 21 total minutes played this season in Washington.
"My goal has always been to play at the NBA level and I think this will be a good experience for me," said Blatche. "More than anything, I want to play and I'm looking forward to the chance to show what I can do."
The Wizards sent Ramos to Roanoke on November 14. He is averaging 11.6 points, 9.8 rebounds and 2.3 blocks in eight games with the Dazzle.
