Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Miami Marlins announced a series of transactions that impact their Double-A affiliate Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp roster prior to tonight's game against the Jackson Generals at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville at 7:05 p.m.
Miami Marlins right-handed relief pitcher Nick Wittgren has joined the Jumbo Shrimp on a major league rehab assignment. Wittgren is currently on Miami's 10-day disabled list, retroactive to June 1, with a right middle finger contusion.
Wittgren started the season in with Triple-A New Orleans, where he was 0-2 with a 10.13 ERA in seven relief outings with a save. Wittgren was recalled to the Marlins on April 21, and with Miami pitched in 18 games in relief while going 2-1 with a 3.06 ERA, striking out 17 batters in his 17 and two-thirds innings of work.
Wittgren has pitched parts of the last three seasons for the Marlins in the majors, going 9-5 with a 3.71 ERA in 104 appearances. Wittgren previously pitched in Jacksonville in parts of three seasons from 2013-15, collecting 20 saves during the 2014 Southern League Championship season. Wittgren, 27, is a native of Torrance, California, and was selected by the Marlins in the ninth round of the 2012 draft out of Purdue University.
Additionally, infielder Peter Mooney has been transferred from the Triple-A New Orleans disabled list to Jacksonville's active roster. Mooney had played in 11 games for the Baby Cakes before he was placed on the disabled list on April 17. Mooney spent the majority of the 2016 season with Jacksonville where he was a Southern League Midseason All-Star, hitting .258 with four home runs and 29 RBI in 119 games played.
In a corresponding move, infielder Mason Davis has been released by the Marlins organization. Davis played in 37 games for Jacksonville, hitting .193 with no home runs and eight runs batted in.
The Jumbo Shrimp roster stands at 25 active players, plus Wittgren and Brett Graves on their major league rehab assignments from the Miami Marlins.
