Winterhawks Weekly: Portland Remains Perfect with Pair of Wins over Seattle

May 9, 2022 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Portland Winterhawks News Release

The second round of the 2022 WHL Playoffs between the Portland Winterhawks and Seattle Thunderbirds opened in Kent this week, with Portland topping the T-Birds on the road in Game 1 and at home in Game 2.

The Winterhawks remain unbeaten in the postseason and hold a 2-0 series lead in the best-of-seven against Seattle.

Hot Hawks:

Forward Gabe Klassen continues to lead the Winterhawks in postseason scoring, adding two assists to his total on Saturday and grabbing the game-winning goal in Game 2 on Sunday to push his mark to four goals and four assists for eight points in six games.

Forward Tyson Kozak bounced back from a two-game point-less skid to record an assist on Saturday before notching his first goal of the playoffs on Sunday to get Portland on the board in Game 2.

Forward Robbie Fromm-Delorme also found the scoresheet for the first time in two games on Saturday with an empty-net marker, then set up Kozak's opener on Sunday with the primary assist. Fromm-Delorme ranks third among Winterhawks skaters with one goal and three helpers during the postseason.

Defenseman Clay Hanus came through in the clutch in his return to the lineup in Game 1, netting the late game-winning goal on the power play after setting up Marcus Nguyen's goal earlier in the contest.

Goaltender Taylor Gauthier remained unbeaten through now six starts in the postseason, stopping 23 and 28 shots on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, and has not allowed more than two goals in any game this postseason.

Weekly Rewind:

Game 1: Portland 4 at Seattle 2 (POR leads 1-0)

Clay Hanus struck on the power play at 16:21 of the third period to give the Winterhawks the go-ahead goal en route to a 4-2 victory over the Seattle Thunderbirds in Game 1 of their second-round playoff series on Saturday night. With the win, Portland moved to 5-0-0 in the playoffs and took a 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven.

Game 2: Portland 2 vs Seattle 1 (POR leads 2-0)

The story from Game 1 rolled right into Game 2 as the Winterhawks struck late - this time shorthanded - to take a 2-1 win over the Seattle Thunderbirds at Veterans Memorial Coliseum on Sunday. The Winterhawks now hold a 2-0 series lead with Game 3 set for Wednesday night at 7:00 P.M. at the VMC.

The Week Ahead:

Round two rolls on with potentially three games on the docket this week!

The puck drops for Game 3 at 7:00 P.M. on Wednesday right here in Portland as the Hawks seek a 3-0 series lead, then the series shifts back to Seattle for Game 4 on Friday at 7:05 P.M.

If Portland wins both of those games, the team will advance to the Western Conference Final, but should Seattle win at least one of those contests, Game 5 will take place on Saturday at 6:00 P.M. here at Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
