Winterhawks Fall 4-3 Saturday in Game 1 vs. Seattle

The Portland Winterhawks fell 4-3 to the Seattle Thunderbirds Saturday in Game 1 of their first round playoff series in front of 7,072 fans at Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

Seattle opened the scoring 1:01 into the game on a goal by Mathew Barzal, then made it 2-0 with a power play goal from Cory Millette at 15:43. Portland got one back with just 5.5 seconds left in the period when defenseman Blake Heinrich came in from the point and banged in a rebound to cut the deficit to 2-1 heading into the second period.

Portland tied it 8:37 into the second on a power play when a shot by former Thunderbird Adam Henry from the point beat netminder Taran Kozun to even the game at 2-2. It remained that way going into the third, despite Portland peppering Kozun with 18 shots in the period.

With the game still tied early in the third, Seattle was awarded a penalty shot at 6:17 when Ryan Gropp was hauled down on a break. Portland goaltender Adin Hill knocked his attempt aside to keep the game even, and then just 10 seconds later on the ensuing play Evan Weinger blew past a Seattle defender and beat Kozun for a 3-2 Portland lead.

Seattle tied it at 11:41 when Scott Eansor banged in a rebound to make it 3-3, then got the winner on Barzal's second of the night at 17:18 to take a 1-0 lead in the series.

Heinrich finished with two points for Portland in the loss.

Game 2 of the series will be tomorrow at the Moda Center at 5 p.m.
