Portland Winterhawks News Release
Portland, Ore. - The Portland Winterhawks Hockey Club today announced they have traded 20-year-old defenseman Kurtis Smythe to the Medicine Hat Tigers for an eighth-round selection in the 2023 WHL Prospects Draft.
The trade brings the Winterhawks' roster down to 24 players, including 14 forwards, eight defensemen and two goaltenders.
"Kurtis has been a great leader on and off the ice for us throughout his time in a Winterhawks jersey. He has been a pivotal part of our team's success and we wish him the best with Medicine Hat," said Winterhawks Senior Vice President, Head Coach and General Manager Mike Johnston. "This move was tough to make, but it's one we feel works well because we can offer our younger defensemen more opportunities to grow and Kurtis can help the young group in Medicine Hat continue their early season success."
Smythe played in six games this year, recording one assist. Originally selected in the second round of the 2017 WHL Prospects Draft by Saskatoon, Smythe has played 121 games in Portland over the last four seasons and represented the team as an alternate captain during the 2021-22 season.
Thank you, Kurtis, for your time with the Winterhawks and for your contributions to the Portland community.
