SALEM, Va. - The Dash jumped out to a 6-1 lead behind multi-RBI performances from Jake Fincher and Landon Lassiter, but the Salem Red Sox plated six in the bottom of the fourth en route to an 8-6 victory over Winston-Salem in the opener of Saturday's doubleheader at Haley Toyota Field.
Less than 24 hours after recording its second-largest offensive output, the Dash plated runs in three of their first four innings. Brady Conlan's two-out RBI double gave Winston-Salem (10-19) a first-inning lead, and the Dash made it 4-0 in the third thanks to a Louis Silverio RBI single and a Lassiter two-run single.
After Salem (18-10) dented the scoreboard with an unearned run in the bottom of the third, Fincher delivered a two-run double to give the Dash their biggest lead of the contest. Fincher is 5-for-7 in this series after entering with an 0-for-22 slump.
This 6-1 advantage disappeared in the bottom of the fourth. Nick Lovullo's two-run double, which was Salem's second and final hit of the frame, pulled the Red Sox within three.
Dash starter Zach Thompson walked the next batter, which prompted Louie Lechich's arrival from the bullpen. Lechich (1-2) allowed all three inherited runners to score, though these runs came in thanks to a Danny Mendick throwing error and a wild pitch that proved to be the game's deciding play.
From there, Salem pitching only surrendered one hit. The bullpen duo of Jordan Weems (2-1) and Adam Lau combined to spin 3.2 strong innings to earn the win and save, respectively.
The Red Sox added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth on a Josh Ockimey RBI double. Winston-Salem did put the tying runs on base in the top of the seventh before Johan Cruz lined out to second to end the contest.
The finale of Saturday's doubleheader will begin at approximately 8:05 p.m. from Haley Toyota Field. Brannon Easterling (2-1, 2.70 ERA) will take to the mount for Winston-Salem, while fellow right-hander Roniel Raudes (1-1, 5.16 ERA) will counter for the Red Sox. Play-by-play coverage will be available on wsdash.com/broadcast and the TuneIn Radio App.
