THE DASH AND BRAVES DO BATTLE IN THE PEACH STATE
The Winston-Salem Dash and Rome Braves square off for the final time in 2021 when the sides meet at State Mutual Stadium for a six-game series.
Despite the Dash and Braves ranking in the bottom half of the league in batting average and homeruns, both Winston-Salem and Rome have been playing better baseball as of late, with the Dash earning a three-game split with the first-place Hudson Valley Renegades, while Rome recorded a series victory against first-place Bowling Green, scoring wins in four of six contests.
The strength of the Braves this year has been their pitching staff - one that ranks second in the High-A East in ERA and third in homeruns allowed. Rome holds opposing batters to a .237 batting average as well, fourth best in the league.
THE TANNER GORDON FILE
Starting for the Braves in the opener is Tanner Gordon, a righty from Champaign, IL. Gordon spent one season at Indiana University after spending the prior two seasons at John A. Logan (IL) College. Gordon, a sixth round pick by the Braves in 2019, spent the 2019 season with Low-A Danville, tossing 24.1 innings while striking out 36. The former sixth-round pick has spent time with both Low-A Augusta and High-A Rome on the year, posting solid numbers with the GreenJackets before receiving his promotion back to Rome on August 10. Known for mixing in a good fastball with solid off-speed pitches, Gordon is able to rack up strikeouts while harnessing his steady command, keeping batters off balance.
MIESES MASHES IN AUGUST
Luis Mieses finishes the month of August on a tear - slashing .293/.343/.587 in 92 at-bats. The outfielder has shown his extra-base ability as well, slugging 16 extra-base knocks during the month, driving in 19. In total, Mieses cracked 10 doubles, one triple, and five homers in the month of August, pacing an upstart Dash offense.
ONE LAST TIME
The Dash hit the road for the final time in 2021 when they do battle with the Rome Braves. Coming into the series, Winston-Salem holds a 20-33 record away from Truist Stadium. The Dash have never played Rome at State Mutual Stadium however, with the two sides playing only in the Camel City from May 4-9. At the conclusion of the series, the Dash will return home to face the Bowling Green Hot Rods and Asheville Tourists for the two final series of the year.
A YELLOW JACKET AND A BRAVE IN '21
The reigning High-A East Player of the Week, Luke Waddell, figures to be a staple in the lineup for Rome. Drafted in the fifth-round from Georgia Tech in this year's MLB Draft, Waddell batted .545 with six homeruns, 10 RBIs, and eight runs scored in six games against the league-leading Bowling Green Hot Rods. The Loveland, OH native has just 19 MiLB games under his belt but is helping carry the offensive load, tallying a slash line of .313/.375/.609.
VALLES JOINS THE DASH
Jesus Valles joins the Dash from Low-A Kannapolis after receiving a promotion. Valles, who is expected to start Friday's game against the Braves, carried a 3-4 record and 5.12 ERA with the Cannon Ballers this year, starting eight times and striking out 35. A righty from Valencia, Venezuela, Valles originally signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2018, signing as a free agent with the White Sox on May 12, 2021.
A PREVIEW OF TOMORROW
Winston-Salem hands the ball to Kaleb Roper for the third game of the series Thursday. Roper is coming off his best performance of the season against Hudson Valley, twirling six shutout innings with six punch outs while allowing just one hit.
The Braves send Jared Shuster to the bump for the midweek start Thursday. A 2020 first-round pick from Wake Forest, the righty has racked ups 3.70 ERA in 14 starts this year, fanning 73 batters in 58.1 innings. Shuster started against the Dash on May 7, allowing two earned runs in 3.1 innings.
