DASH BEAT WOODIES 11-3 SUNDAY
The Dash offense plated seven runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to lead Winston-Salem to an 11-3, Mother's Day victory over the Down East Wood Ducks at BB&T Ballpark on Sunday afternoon. The Dash got on the board in the bottom of the first inning as Alex Call drove a 2-0 pitch over the Nature's Select Knoll in left field for a solo home run to put Winston-Salem ahead 1-0. The Wood Ducks briefly took the lead by plating three unearned runs in the sixth, but Winston-Salem jumped back ahead with three in the bottom of the frame, with Yeyson Yrizarri's two-run double giving the Dash the lead good for good. In the seventh, Winston-Salem sent 11 men to the plate and received a two-run triple from Blake Rutherford and a bases-clearing triple from Ti'Quan Forbes. On the hill, Bernardo Flores logged a quality start, tossing 6.2 innings in the win.
A CALL TO ACTION
After getting off to a 2-for-22 start to the season, Call has established himself as one of the more consistent hitters in the Dash lineup. The former Ball State star has registered a hit in 10 of his last 11 games, posting a .366 average with four home runs and 14 RBIs during that stretch. Call, who was named the Mid-American Conference Player of the Year in 2016, is slashing an impressive .278/.388/.491 batting line with five homers and 19 RBIs in 29 games played this season.
FORBES FINDS HIS STROKE
After sitting with a .217 average on May 5, Forbes has since improved his average by .54 points with an impressive 11-for-24 stretch over his last six games. Facing off against his former organization in the Texas Rangers, Forbes went 4-for-7 with a homer and four RBIs over the last two games of the Dash's series against Down East.
MAY IS STILL OUR MONTH
The Dash are off to a strong start in May, posting a 9-4 mark over their first 13 games of the month. This marks the best start to the month in the Dash era (2009-present).
WELL-BALANCED ATTACK
Through the first 37 games of the season, the Dash have proven to be one of the most well-rounded teams in the Carolina League. Winston sits atop the circuit in several offensive categories, including slugging percentage (.447) and doubles (89). The team is second in the league in runs scored (204), batting average (.282) and hits (356), and third in homers (31). Meanwhile, Winston-Salem sports the best ERA in the Carolina League with a 3.42 mark.
A BATTLE FOR SUPREMACY
Following their scheduled off day, the Dash now begin a pivotal three-game series against first-place Buies Creek, who is one game up on Winston-Salem in the Southern Division standings. In their lone matchup of the season, the Dash took two of three against Buies Creek from May 4-6 at BB&T Ballpark. Buies Creek has the second-worst average in the circuit with a .237 mark, but the club owns a team ERA of 3.43 ERA, which is the second-best mark in the 10-team league.
A BULLDOG ON THE MOUND
Winston-Salem will send right-hander Jimmy Lambert to the hill in the series opener on Tuesday. The former Fresno State Bulldog has been strong in 2018, posting a 3-2 record with a 3.16 ERA in five starts. Lambert, who was a fifth-round pick by the White Sox in 2016, has lasted six innings in each of his last two outings. The righty earned the CL Pitcher of the Week award after allowing just two hits in six innings at Wilmington on April 27. In his last outing, Lambert allowed one run and three hits in six innings at Salem. The 23-year-old has allowed three hits or less in four of his five outings. More information is available on page 3.
DASH DOTS
Last season, the Dash were just 3-8 at Jim Perry Stadium...Astros starter Jorge Alcala was ejected in his lone outing against Winston-Salem this season. On May 4, the right-hander hit Joel Booker in the head, prompting a benches-clearing scuffle.
