Mississippi RiverKings News Release
Southaven, Miss. - There was no love lost between the RiverKings and the Huntsville Havoc on Valentine's Day as the 'Kings showed no mercy, beating the Havoc 5-1 at the Landers Center in Southaven.
The RiverKings wasted no time getting on the board. Mark Magnowski slipped the puck past Kevin Beech to just 41 seconds into the game. Assists went to Darrell Stoddard and Matt Whitehead. The 'Kings then added to their lead at the 15:04 mark of the same period, as Stoddard blasted a Whitehead pass past the glove hand of the Havoc netminder to give the RiverKings a 2-0 lead. The goal was Stoddard's 200th point of his professional career.
The second period started off the same way the first period did as Deven Stillar tipped a Leland Fidler shot over Beech to put the 'Kings up by three.
Huntsville did not allow themselves to be shut out. Ray Ortiz came in on Scott Darling and ripped a wrister over the glove of the RiverKings netminder at the 10:53 mark of the second period to cut the lead to 2-1.
But the third period was all RiverKings. Ken Selby set himself up in the slot and put Whitehead's pass over Beech as the home team regained their three-goal lead. Mike Tuomi finished the scoring at the 11:45 mark as he scored with an assist going to Jeff Topilko.
Scott Darling (8-12-1) picked up the win in net as he stopped 31 of 32 shots against. Kevin Beech (9-7-2) took the loss as he turned aside 26 of the 31 shots against.
The RiverKings take to the ice next on February 17 on the road against the Knoxville Ice Bears at 6:35. The game will air live on Sports 56 and the America One television network.
