'Gators Netminder BJ O'Brien Named SBK Player of the Week

CHARLOTTE, NC (February 14, 2012) - The Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) today announced goaltender B.J. O'Brien of the Louisiana IceGators is the SBK Player of the Week for February 6-12.

O'Brien went 3-0 last week, posting a 1.00 goals against average, a .962 save percentage and one shutout as the IceGators extended their winning streak to five games.

On Wednesday, the native of Lakeville, MN recorded his second professional shutout, stopping all 20 Pensacola shots in a 2-0 blanking of the Ice Flyers. O'Brien continued his solid play on Friday as he made 27 saves in Louisiana's 2-1 win over the Mississippi RiverKings. O'Brien finished his week on Saturday with a 29-save performance in leading the IceGators to a 7-2 win over Pensacola.

Before turning professional, O'Brien had a stellar career at St. Norbert College. After making 70 saves in a heartbreaking 2-1 loss in the 2010 championship game, O'Brien led the Green Knights to the 2011 NCAA Division III Men's Hockey Championship, defeating Adrian College 4-3 and earning Most Outstanding Player honors for the second consecutive year. In his senior season at St. Norbert, O'Brien went 22-2-1 with a 1.64 goals against average and .931 save percentage and earned All-American, All-Conference, All-USCHO and USCHO Division III Player of the Year honors. Currently on a personal five-game winning streak, O'Brien, who was acquired from Augusta on December 20, is tied for second in the SPHL in shutouts (2), tied for third in save percentage (.908) and ranks fourth overall in both wins (12 - tied) and goals against average (2.58).
