RiverHawks Soar to Win in Third Period
February 14, 2012 - SPHL (SPHL)
Augusta RiverHawks News Release
The Augusta RiverHawks entered the third period down a goal, but were determined to bring home the victory as they dominated the third period and defeated the Fayetteville FireAntz 4-2 Tuesday night at the Crown Center in Fayetteville, NC.
The FireAntz entered the third period with the advantage, but the RiverHawks turned up the heat out-shooting their hosts 12-2 in the final frame. Of those 12 shots, three beat FireAntz' goaltender Mike Brown within seven minutes of the second intermission.
RiverHawks' Captain Matt Auffrey led the way for the RiverHawks, scoring the game's first goal and adding an assist in the third period. Jim Gehring also had a goal and an assist, as did Egor Mironov who propelled the RiverHawks with the first goal of the explosive third period.
Forward Brendan Taylor continued his strong offensive play of late picking up the game winning goal, his fourth of the season. Offensive spark-plug Branden Kosolofsky snapped a four game scoring drought by picking up a pair of assists in the game.
The RiverHawks enjoyed another solid effort in net, as Jon Olthuis recorded his 12th win of the season by stopping 19 shots. It was the fourth win in a row for Olthuis, who pulled into a tie for fourth in the SPHL amongst goaltenders in that category.
For the FireAntz, the third period collapse was another tough pill to swallow for a team struggling to get back into the playoff picture in the SPHL regular season standings. They enjoyed a strong goaltending effort through two periods from workhorse Mike Brown, who finished with 31 saves on 35 shots.
The FireAntz were led offensively by franchise leading scorer Rob Sich, who picked up the team's first goal and added an assist on the second. The two-point night gives Sich 12 points in 11 games since being reacquired by the FireAntz earlier this season.
The RiverHawks are back in action on Phoenix Refrigeration Ice at the James Brown Arena Friday, February 17th as the RiverHawks play the Columbus Cottonmouths. The puck drops at 7:35pm.Tickets for the game are available through the RiverHawks' office and the James Brown Arena box office.
