
Wings Weather Storm in 16-15 Win Over New Jersey

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ - The Philadelphia Wings' defeated the New Jersey Storm by a score of 16-15 at the Continental Airlines Arena in a much needed road win. The Wings received some much-needed offensive power with eight different players contributing with goals. The Wings take to the turf again this Saturday when they face the Rochester Knighthawks at the First Union Center at 8 p.m.
"This is obviously a critical win for this team," said Wings' coach Adam Mueller. "After struggling offensively, we were finally able to score some goals this evening. This game is a great confidence builder as we head home to play the New York Saints at home on Saturday night."
The Storm started the scoring just :36 into the first quarter when Roy Colsey scored unassisted. New Jersey's Neal Powless got his first of the night also unassisted at 6:06 but the Wings put their first of the night up just :18 later when Keith Cromwell scored his first goal of the night. Scott Stewart answered right back for the Storm just 1:11 later to keep the Storm up by two. Cromwell recorded his second of the night at 8:36 followed by Jeff Ratcliffe's first goal of the night at 8:56 to tie the score at three. New Jersey answered right back with a goal by Cam Bomberry to put New Jersey in the lead again followed by a goal by Bobby Horsey to put the Storm up by two. Michael Ladouceur scored the Storm's sixth goal at 11:02 followed by Bomberry's second goal of the night at 12:44. At the end of the first quarter the Storm led the Wings by a score of 7-3.
Philadelphia struck first in the second quarter with Tom Marechek's first goal of the game at 1:13 followed by Jeff Spano's first of the night exactly 1:00 later. The Wing's Tony Henderson followed up just :30 later to pull the Wings within one, then Paul Cantabene tied it with his first of the night. The Storm pulled starting goaltender Derek General at 3:29 and replaced him with former Wing Chris Sanderson. Defenseman Ryan Traynor put the Wings in the lead for the first time at 4:29. New Jersey tied it at eight when Horsey scored his second goal of the night at 5:06. The Storm regained the lead when Billy LeFeuvre scored at 6:38, but the Wings tied it at nine when Ratcliffe had his second of the night at 8:20. Cantabene recorded his second of the night to put the Wings up by one, and then Henderson recorded his second of the night to put the Wings up by two. At the end of the half the Wings led the Storm by a score of 11-9. Wings goaltender Dallas Eliuk made 14 saves after two quarters, Storm goaltender Derek General made 12 saves in 18:29 minutes of play and goaltender Chris Sanderson made 6 saves in 11:31 minutes of play.
The Wings got on the board first in the third quarter when Henderson recorded a hat-trick at :57. The Storm then scored four straight with goals by Ladouceur at 3:10, Dan Chermotti at 7:59, and Stewart at 14:30. At the end of the third quarter the Storm led the Wings by a score of 13-12.
Traynor scored his second of the night for the Wings at 1:49 in the fourth to regain the lead for Philadelphia followed by another Wings score by Henderson at 3:46. But the Storm tied it at 14 when Colsey scored his second goal of the game. Horsey put the Storm in the lead on a breakaway goal at 9:44, but the Wings' Tom Ryan tied the score at 15 just :35 later. The Wings retook the lead on a critical short-handed goal by Marechek at 18:04 to give the Wings the win. Eliuk finished the night with 34 saves.
Tony Henderson led the Wings offense with six points (4G, 2A) each. Seven other players scored for Philadelphia, including Tom Marechek with five points (2G, 3A), Paul Cantabene with four points (2G, 2A), Jeff Ratcliffe with three points (2G, 1A), Ryan Traynor with three points (2G, 1A), Keith Cromwell with two points (2G,), Jeff Spano with two points (1G, 1A), and Tom Ryan with one goal.
Leading the Storm in scoring was Michael Ladouceur with five points (3G, 2A), Bobby Horsey with four points (3G, 1A), and Cam Bomberry with three points (2G, 1A).
NOTES: The Philadelphia Wings signed forward Dan Marohl today as a free agent. Marohl played three games for the Ottawa Rebel earlier this season ... Forward Jake Bergey will sit out the 2003 season to recuperate from a torn ACL in his left knee. Bergey suffered the injury in a pre-season game against the Colorado Mammoth on December 6 ...
