Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release

The Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings professional baseball team wille participate in the Harlingen Centennial in a number of ways throughout the 2010 season, which will include players wearing vintage uniforms and honoring longtime local and area businesses and professions.

The club, with the Harlingen Centennial Committee, will have a number of Centennial Wednesdays and Saturdays celebrating the businesses that began during various decades. Then, for the series featuring a decade, the Wings plan to have their players wear vintage uniforms of that era.

The players, wearing the vintage uniforms, will also go to various retail outlets, hospitals, and civic and fraternal organizations to publicize the 100 years of Harlingen.

After that particular series, the uniforms will be auctioned off with the money to be donated to charities.

Larry Galbreath, who is in charge of the centennial events, said the committee is excited about this participation by the WhiteWings, and that he personally looks forward to these special projects.

Included during those home stands will be ticket discounts for fans dressed in the time period, food discounts promoting the era and special era entertainment.

Highlight of the summer festivities will be the Turn of the Century series, beginning on Aug. 11, when the Wings will wear uniforms that players wore at the time that Harlingen was founded. There will be special festivities and acknowledgement of companies, professionals and others of that year and era when Harlingen was officially founded.

These specific Centennial nights that begin a series include:

June 23 (game with Edinburg Road Runners) 80s night)

June 26 (game with the Edinburg Roadrunners, includes series with Laredo Broncos) 70s night;

July 7 (game with Amarillo Dillas) 60s night;

July 10 (doubleheader with San Angelo Colts) 50s night;

July 30 (game with Amarillo Dillas) 40s night;

July 31 (game with Amarillo Dillas 30s night;

Aug, 11 (game with Edinburg Roadrunners) Turn of the Century Night;

Aug. 14 (game with Edinburg Roadrunners) 20s night.

WhiteWings General Manager Cory Dirksen said that before each game the WhiteWings will honor those companies and professions that were started in each of the decades.

He said that baseball, professional, semi-professional and amateur has been a vital part of entertainment in Harlingen and the Rio Grande Valley for a century.

He said although all businesses and professions of those eras will be acknowledged, it is anticipated that there may be some who want to have a bigger role in the festivities by being WhiteWings Centennial Jersey partners, which will include their logos on the uniforms.

Each player will autograph the uniform he has worn and the partners will have the choice of determining what charity or charities they wish to receive the auction money.

The WhiteWings will play a School Day exhibition game against the Edinburg Roadrunners at 11:05 a.m. on May 24.

The WhiteWings then will open their 2010 regular season with a two-game series in Laredo on May 27. They open their 44-game home season on May 29 against the Roadrunners. Most home games will begin at 7:05 p.m. They also will play the Roadrunners in a School Day exhibition game at 11:05 a.m. on May 24.
