Wings Sneak Past Walleye 3-2 in a Shootout

(Toledo, OH) - Toledo picked up goals from Shane Berschbach and Dominic Zombo but Kalamazoo took down the Walleye 3-2 in a shootout Thursday at the Huntington Center. Toledo has an overall record of 5-5-0-3 and is 0-1-0-1 at home.

Toledo struck first as Shane Berschbach (5th) tapped in a rebound past goaltender Joel Martin at 14:05 of the first period. Dominic Zombo cut in front of the Kalamazoo net and collected his first professional goal at 16:19 of the period. Tyler Sikura set up the rush for Zombo's first.

The KWings countered with a goal at 19:05 of the first period, when forward Dane Fox deflected a blue line shot past Jake Paterson. The Walleye held Kalamazoo to just nine shots on goal through two periods while Toledo sent 17 on the Kalamazoo net.

The game went late into the third period before the Wings tied the contest at 18:57. Kalamazoo sent 15 shots on the Toledo net during the third period. Neither team scored in overtime despite multiple chances including one right out in front by Shane Berschbach. Kalamazoo scored twice early in the shootout before goals from Alden Hirschfeld and A.J. Jenks kept Toledo alive until David Gilbert beat Paterson in the fifth round.

Walleye Notes: Goaltender Jake Paterson stopped 28 of the 30 shots he faced and his record is 2-3-1 on the season. Kalamazoo had 6 shots on goal in the overtime while Toledo had four. The Walleye have gone to overtime four times this year with all four going into a shootout. Toledo is 1-3 in shootouts this year.
