Wings Return Pulkkinen to Griffins
April 24, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Grand Rapids Griffins News Release
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Detroit Red Wings on Friday assigned right wing Teemu Pulkkinen to the Grand Rapids Griffins.
Detroit's fourth choice (111th overall) in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, Pulkkinen has amassed 61 points (34-27-61) in 46 games with the Griffins this season, tying for 10th overall in league scoring. Most recently, the Vantaa, Finland, native captured the AHL's Willie Marshall Award as the league's leading goal scorer for the 2014-15 campaign, despite playing in at least 27 fewer games than the three next-highest goal scorers. In addition, Pulkkinen was named to the 2014-15 AHL First All-Star Team on April 9.
The 23-year-old has also appeared in 31 games with Detroit this season, picking up five goals, three assists, 10 PIM and a plus-five rating. The 5-foot-11, 183-pound forward earned his first NHL goal on Jan. 20 versus Minnesota.
Pulkkinen has strung together a multitude of accomplishments during his 2014-15 campaign, including taking part in the AHL All-Star Classic, tying the Griffins' franchise record of eight consecutive games with a goal, and becoming the first player in Griffins franchise history to record back-to-back 30 goal seasons (31 in 2013-14). On March 4 versus Oklahoma City, Pulkkinen notched his second hat trick of the season; his first career hat trick came on Jan. 29 at Iowa, when he became the second Griffin ever to record a hat trick via three power play goals.
The Griffins will begin their best-of-five Western Conference Quarterfinals series against the Toronto Marlies this weekend. Grand Rapids will visit Ricoh Coliseum on Saturday and Sunday at 3 p.m. before returning to Van Andel Arena on Wednesday, April 29 at 7 p.m. for the first of as many as three straight home games.
