Wings Close out Regular Season in Washington Saturday Looking for Home Playoff Game
April 17, 2013 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Philadelphia Wings News Release
The Philadelphia Wings head out west to Washington this weekend to close out the regular season against the Stealth (8-7) at Comcast Arena on Saturday night at 10 p.m. Having secured a spot in the post-season in their home finale against Toronto last Saturday, the Wings are now taking aim at hosting a home playoff game.
With a Wings win in Washington and a Rochester loss to Buffalo, the Wings will host their first home playoff game since 2002, which was also the last time the team made the playoffs in consecutive seasons. At 7-8, the Wings are currently tied for second in the East with the Knighthawks, who have yet to clinch a playoff spot but can solidify a home playoff game against the Wings if they defeat Buffalo on Saturday.
Through 15 games, the Wings have been streaky; winning their first two games, before dropping three in a row and then bouncing back to win their next three in a row. In March, the Wings began a four game losing streak that extended into April and ended at five before the team rattled off two gutsy wins at home to secure a playoff berth. Despite the team's inconsistent record, four Wings players: Drew Westervelt, Jordan Hall, Kevin Buchanan and Kevin Crowley have managed to score at least one point in each game to lead a balanced Wings offense.
Veteran goaltender Brandon Miller was today named NLL Defensive Player of the Week for the third time this season. Miller's defense between the pipes against the East division leading Rock helped the Wings capture a victory and a playoff berth. The net minder reached a milestone, recording his 4,000th career save on 48 saves in the win.
Philadelphia and Washington have met once previously this season at Wells Fargo Center in early March. A depleted Wings squad fell to the Stealth 16-10, in a loss that spurred the Wings five game skid. The Wings played that game without Captain Brodie Merrill, defensive anchor Brett Manney and face-off man Jeff Reynolds. Philadelphia will meet the Stealth at as close to full strength as they have been all season and behind the momentum of two wins.
