Wingnuts Win Sixth Straight

WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts (34-18) beat the Kansas City T-Bones (19-33) 10-4 at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Wednesday night.

Wichita has won a season-high six games in a row.

Kansas City took an early 1-0 lead on Matt Padgett's two-out, solo home run to right-center in the top of the first, but the Wingnuts scored twice in the bottom half and did not trail the rest of the night. Ryan Khoury drew a four-pitch leadoff walk against T-Bones' starter Connor Graham and advanced to second when Jake Kahaulelio was hit by a pitch. John Rodriguez pulled a single to right field that scored Khoury with the tying run. Kahaulelio went to third on Rodriguez's base hit and came home when C.J. Ziegler grounded into a double play.

With two outs and no one on base in the bottom of the second, David Amberson reached first on an infield single. Jared McDonald lined a single to left that chased Amberson to third. After McDonald stole second base, Amberson came home with the Wingnuts' third run on a passed ball charged to T-Bones' catcher Petey Paramore.

The team's matched runs in the fourth inning. Felix Molina bunted for a hit with one out, stole second base, and scored on a two-out single to right from Joey Gathright that cut the Wingnuts' lead to 3-2.

In the bottom half, Cole Armstrong doubled to right-center with one out, took third on a wild pitch, and came home on McDonald's two-out, groundball single to center.

Abel Nieves drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the sixth and advanced to second when Armstrong grounded out. Amberson dropped down a bunt single to third base that put runners on the corners with two away. McDonald followed with a two-run double to left-center that opened up a 6-2 lead.

Devin Goodwin hit a solo home run down the left field line in the top of the seventh that made it 6-3, but the Wingnuts responded with four runs in the bottom half. Kahaulelio led off with a double down the left field line and scored on a line drive single to left-center from Rodriguez. After Ziegler walked, Josh Hildebrand relieved Graham. Brent Clevlen walked to load the bases, and set up a two-run double to right-center by Nieves. Armstrong capped the inning with a sacrifice fly to center field.

Chris Smith earned the win for the Wingnuts, allowing three earned runs on seven hits in seven innings. Smith walked three and struck out five. Smith has pitched seven innings or more in each of his last four starts.

Graham took the loss, allowing nine runs, eight earned, on 10 hits in six-plus innings. Graham walked four and struck out one.

Andrew Aizenstadt worked a perfect top of the eighth for Wichita. Kansas City scored their final run in the top of the ninth on a sacrifice fly from Goodwin.

All nine of Wichita's starters reached base at least once while eight scored at least one run. McDonald finished with three hits and three RBI.
