Wichita Wingnuts News Release

LAREDO, TX- The Wichita Wingnuts defeated the Laredo Lemurs 9-5 in Game Two of the American Association Division Series at Uni-Trade Stadium on Thursday night.

The Wingnuts lead the best-of-five series 2-0.

Wichita cranked out five home runs to account for all nine of their runs scored. Ryan Hinson earned the win, allowing one earned run on five hits in six and two-thirds strong innings.

Ryan Khoury led off the game with a walk. Two batters later, John Rodriguez hit a line drive to deep left field that broke off the glove of John Allen. Allen crashed into the fence, which left the ball on the warning track and resulted in a two-run, inside the park home run. After C.J. Ziegler fouled out to third base, the benches briefly emptied. Greg Porter followed with a line drive single to center and scored when David Peralta slugged a line drive, two-run homer to right field.

With runners on first and second and two outs in the bottom of the second, Stephen Douglas doubled to left field to score Steve Pearson with Laredo's first run of the series. Ryan Khoury gunned down Anthony Scelfo at the plate for the final out of the inning with a relay throw from left field. Jessie Mier withstood a collision with Scelfo at the plate to complete the play.

The Wingnuts grabbed the run right back in the top of the third when Jake Kahaulelio homered to deep left-center.

In the top of the fifth, the Wingnuts broke the game open with two more two-run homers. With two outs and no one on base, Kahaulelio doubled to left-center. Rodriguez homered on a high flyball down the left field line that stayed just fair inside the pole. After Ziegler walked, Porter cracked a two-run shot to right-center against the wind that made it 9-1 Wingnuts.

Hinson took control of the game through the middle innings and recorded 12 of his 20 total outs on groundballs. Hinson walked five and struck out three.

Laredo scored four unearned runs in the bottom of the eighth to get within 9-5. Uriak Marquez hit a sacrifice fly to right that scored Palmer Karr Jr., while Steve Pearson hit a two-out, three run homer down the left field line.

Nick Walters and Josh Dew combined to strike out the side in the bottom of the ninth to close out the game.

Rodriguez finished with three hits and four RBI during his multi-homer night. For a second straight game in the series, all nine of the Wingnuts' starters reached base at least once.

Chris Chavez started for the Lemurs and took the loss, allowing nine earned runs on eight hits in four and two-thirds innings. Chavez walked three and struck out one.
