Laredo, TX - The Wichita Wingnuts hit five homeruns in a 9-5 win over the Laredo Lemurs in game two of a five game series to take a commanding 2-0 series lead Thursday night at Uni-Trade Stadium.
The Wingnuts started the homerun barrage in the first inning with John Rodriguez hitting an inside the park homerun. With a runner at first and one out Rodriguez belted the ball to left, John Allen went back on the ball and had it land in his mitt, but at the same time he ran into the wall. The ball popped out of Allen's mitt and Ryan Khoury and John Rodriguez rounded the bases for an inside the park homerun.
The first inning would continue with Greg Porter reaching on a single, which was followed by a David Peralta homerun to left with the Wingnuts taking a 4-0 lead after one.
With the Wingnuts up 4-1 in the top of the third Jake Kahaulelio came to the plate to start off the inning and he launched a solo homerun over the left field fence to make it 5-1 Wichita.
With Chris Chavez still on the mound, the Wingnuts came to the plate in the fifth and with two outs they would start a rally. Kahaulelio doubled, that was followed by John Rodriguez's second homerun of the game to make it 7-1 Wingnuts. C.J. Zielger walked to restart the rally and Greg Porter hit a homerun over the right field wallk to make it 9-1 Wingnuts through four and a half.
The Lemurs had a homerun of their own in the bottom of the eighth with runner at first and third Stephen Pearson hit a three run homerun over the left field wall to make it 9-5 Wingnuts.
In all, there were six homeruns, hit between the two teams, five by the Wingnuts and one by the Lemurs. All the Wingnuts runs came on the homerun ball tonight.
Chris Chavez took the loss for the Lemurs as he threw four and two thirds, giving up nine runs, on eight hits, three walks, and two strikeouts.
Ryan Hinson picked up the win for the Wingnuts as he went six and two thirds, giving up one run, on four hits.
The Laredo Lemurs will now head to Wichita to continue the best of five series with the Wingnuts up 2-0 over the Lemurs.
