Wichita Wingnuts News Release
WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts defeated the Kansas City T-Bones 8-3 at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Thursday night.
Josh Workman hit a grand slam home run in the bottom of the first to set the tone on offense, while Derek Blacksher worked seven strong innings to help the Wingnuts to a fourth consecutive win.
Mike Conroy opened the bottom of the first with a double down the left field line and was sacrificed to third by Josh Horn. Brent Clevlen and Juan Richardson drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. T-Bones' starter Matt Mitchell retired Jorge Delgado on a foul popup to first, but Workman cashed in the early rally with a deep flyabll over the left-center field wall.
Kansas City cut the lead in half against Blacksher in the top of the second when Aharon Eggleston hit a two-out, two-run home run to left-center. Wichita grabbed one of the runs right back in the bottom half when Horn doubled to right-center to score Conroy from first with two outs.
Jim Fasano doubled down the right field line in the top of the fourth to score Ray Sadler from first and cut the Wingnuts' lead to 5-3. After Kala Ka'aihue walked, Eggleston grounded out to second to put the tying runs in scoring position with two outs. Blacksher stranded both when Jeff Hulett popped out to third base in foul territory to end the inning. The T-Bones managed just one runner past first base through the remainder of the game.
Clevlen doubled down the left field line to drive in Conroy in the bottom of the seventh to make it 7-3 Wichita. Edwin Bellorin drove in the Wingnuts' final run with a groundball single up the middle in the bottom of the eighth.
Blacksher earned the win and improved to 3-1 since re-joining the Wingnuts. Blacksher allowed three earned runs on six hits in seven innings, walking one and striking out five.
Mitchell allowed six earned runs on six hits in five innings in the loss. Mitchell walked four and struck out one.
Logan Hoch, Matt Nevarez, and Josh Dew combined for five strikeouts during two scoreless innings in relief of Blacksher.
It is the fifth time this season the Wingnuts have won four games in a row. Horn has now hit safely in 13 straight games while Clevlen has hit safely in 10 straight. Workman's grand slam was the Wingnuts' second of the year.
