Wichita Wingnuts News Release
WICHITA,KS (May 19,2014) - The wind was blowing hard all night at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium, which led to a lot of runs on the board and a bunch of extra base hits when the Wichita Wingnuts (4-1) matched up with the Kansas City T-Bones (2-3) on Monday night. In the end a caught stealing by Nuts' catcher Chris McMurray sealed the deal as Wichita held on for a 9-8 victory.
Alan Williams, making his fourth career start, allowed five runs in his first two innings of work, before settling into a rhythm and earning the victory. The first four T-Bones to bat in the game reached base as Bobby Kuzdale began the game with a double to the gap. David Espinosa followed with an RBI single before Bryan Sabatella hammered a ground rule double. After Williams walked Nick Giarraputo, Danny Richar drove in a pair with the third double of the inning to push KC to a 4-0 lead. Kuzdale then hit a solo shot in the second to extend that advantage to five.
The Wingnuts came back in a hurry in the bottom of the second though. T-Bones starter Justin d'alessandro, who was saddled with the loss, walked the first two batters of the frame. One out later McMurray doubled home the home team's first run. Carlo Testa and David Amberson each walked, setting the stage for Ryan Khoury to single home a pair. Khoury was then thrown out attempting to steal, but in the process Amberson raced home to tie the game at five.
With Williams getting into a groove on the mound, the offense gave him a lead for the first time in the fourth. McMurray was hit by a pitch prior to a bunt single by Testa. David Amberson reached on an error, which brought in a run and then two batters later Jake Kahaulelio singled home two more. That ended a four-run inning and gave Wichita a 9-5 advantage.
Jason Van Skike worked a clean seventh, but in the eighth the T-Bones' first three hitters reached base via hit and scored to pull Kansas City within one. Patrick Mincey entered from the bullpen and ended the push with three consecutive outs.
In the ninth inning, Matt Nevarez allowed two runners to reach on hit by pitches. With two on and two out and the powerful Giarraputo at the plate, the T-Bones attempted a double steal. McMurray delivered a bullet strike down to second base and Kahaulelio applied the tag to end the game.
Williams went 6.0 innings and allowed five runs on six hits. The southpaw walked three and struck out the same number. McMurray went 2-3 with an RBI and scored twice to supplement his game-ending play.
The Wingnuts and T-Bones do it all over on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. Wichita throws RHP Jon Link, while KC is undecided.
