St. Paul 10, Sioux City 3
The St. Paul Saints earned their 1,000th win in club history Tuesday afternoon in memorable fashion, as CF Evan Bigley hit a go-ahead inside-the-park grand slam in the top of the sixth inning. With the bases loaded and his Saints down 3-2, Bigley laced a ball to right field that glanced off of the glove of Explorers RF Tom Mendonca and rolled into foul territory, allowing Bigley to score.
The hit was part of a 3-for-4 afternoon for Bigley, who joined 3B Joe Bonfe (3-for-5) and 1B Angelo Songco (3-for-4) with three-hit days for the Saints. Bigley had an additional RBI to give him five for the day. DH Henry Wrigley had three RBI on a single and a sacrifice fly.
On the hill, defending American Association Pitcher of the Week RHP Anthony Claggett allowed three runs, two of which were earned, on six hits over seven innings, striking out a batter and walking none for the Saints.
St. Paul, which won its first game as a team on June 15, 1993, becomes the fifth independent professional baseball team to win 1,000 games. The Saints join American Association league mates Winnipeg Goldeyes and Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks, along with Atlantic League clubs Bridgeport Bluefish and Somerset Patriots.
Grand Prairie 6, Lincoln 5
In front of a crowd of 4,876 fans in Grand Prairie, the host AirHogs held off a rally by the Lincoln Saltdogs. The AirHogs struck first with a solo home run from 2B Brandon Pinckney in the bottom of the first, but Lincoln bounced back to take a 2-1 lead. The AirHogs retook the lead on a 2-RBI double from C Vince DiFazio in the bottom of the seventh, only to have Lincoln tie the contest in the top of the eighth.
Grand Prairie took the lead for good on back-to-back solo home runs in the bottom of the eighth by DH Jason Botts and LF Palmer Karr.
Lincoln SS Maikol Gonzalez was 2-for-5 with three RBI in the game.
Former Major League pitcher Joe Bisenius struck out seven AirHogs over six innings, allowing only one run on three hits for Lincoln. Aaron Wilkerson went seven innings for Grand Prairie, giving up three hits, two runs, four walks and striking out seven.
