Wichita Wingnuts News Release

Prior to today's road trip opener at Kansas City, the Wingnuts have announced the following roster moves:

- RHP Seth Harvey placed on the disabled list retroactive to 5/30

- INF Matt Chavez placed on the inactive list retroactive to 5/26

- LHP Anthony Capra placed on the inactive list retroactive to 6/5

- Released LHP Santos Rodriguez and LHP Andrew Taylor

- Acquired RHP Kevin Osaki from the Gary SouthShore RailCats for future considerations

After pitching against the Wingnuts on Saturday while the RailCats were at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium, Osaki will join a Wichita pitching staff that has been hit by injuries in recent days. A 25-year old right-hander from Fountain View, California, Osaki pitched for four seasons collegiately at Chapman University before signing with the RailCats last year. In 27 appearances with Gary a season ago, Osaki posted a 4.76 ERA in 45.1 innings. Prior to the trade, he appeared in five games for the RailCats this season, posting a 4.50 ERA in eight innings. The Wingnuts roster now sits at 21 active, with one on the disabled list, and two on the inactive list. An updated roster is attached.

After falling in the homestand finale to Gary yesterday afternoon, the Wingnuts head out on a seven-game road trip which begins tonight with the opener of a three-game set against the Kansas City T-Bones at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.

WICHITA DROPS FINALE

For the second straight day, the Wichita Wingnuts fell behind early to the Gary SouthShore RailCats, as the visitors took the series finale 9-1 to claim the series Sunday afternoon at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. Four batters into the game Gary took the lead, as Jeremy Hamilton singled in the opening run. Jose Sermo then followed with a two-run homer to make it 3-0. In the bottom half Wichita got one back, as T.J. Mittelstaedt brought Christian Stringer home with a single for his club-leading 14th RBI of the season. The RailCats got that run back in the second, then added another three-run frame in the fourth, as Cameron Newell, Alex Crosby, and Brennan Metzger brought in runs consecutively. The visitors added single runs in the fifth and ninth, which was more than enough for a staff that kept the Wichita offense quiet for much of the day. After scoring a run in the first, the Wingnuts offense offered little in terms of threats, and RailCats starter Richard Castillo retired eight in a row at one point. The Wingnuts did not advance a runner past second base after the first inning.

BULLPEN STEPS UP AGAIN

With an injury forcing starter Anthony Capra to leave after just two thirds of an inning on Friday night, the Wichita bullpen was called into action very early, having to cover eight and a third innings. The relief trio of Alex Boshers, Jesse Pratt, and Chase Johnson stepped up, allowing just two runs over those frames. Yesterday, starter Tim Brown posted his shortest start of the year, lasting five innings. The bullpen got the job done again, as Johnson and Fabian Roman each worked a pair of innings, combining to give up just one run. After a shaky start, the bullpen has steadily improved lately for the Wingnuts, having lowered its collective ERA by nearly three runs since May 26.

T.J. ON A TEAR

T.J. Mittelstaedt was hot at the plate on the last homestand, going 10-for-25 (.400) to raise his season average to .344. He drove in Wichita's lone run yesterday, his fourth straight game with at least one RBI, giving him a team-leading 14. Mittelstaedt also tops the league in walks with 19, and is tied for the highest on-base percentage at .500.
