Saints Can't Stop AirHogs Bats, Lose 12-3

AMARILLO, TX - When you give up a run in all but one inning you know it's going to be a long night. That was the case for the St. Paul Saints on Monday night at Potter County Memorial Stadium as they lost to the Texas AirHogs 12-3. The Saints lost for the third straight time and dropped to 12-7 on the season and 4-4 on their 14 game roadtrip, the longest in franchise history.

The AirHogs scored in every inning, but the seventh, when reliever Benji Waite retired the side in order. Of the 12 runs the AirHogs scored 10 came with two outs as all, but one AirHog collected a hit.

The Saints actually scored the first run of the game in the first when Nate Hanson singled with two outs and Angelo Songco followed with a walk. Tony Thomas extended his hitting streak to 18 with an RBI single to left to make it 1-0. The 18 game hitting streak is tied for the seventh longest in Saints history with Jose Hernandez who did it in 2012.

The AirHogs got even in the bottom of the inning when they hit their first of three home runs off of Saints starter John Straka. Burt Reynolds hit a solo homer to left, his eighth of the season, to tie the game at one.

The second inning was the lone inning the AirHogs didn't score their runs with two outs. With one out and two on Cody Lenahan made it 2-1 with an RBI double. Two batters later Will DuPont made it 3-1 with an RBI single.

In the third Michael Miller made it 5-1 with a two-run homer to left, his fourth of the season.

With the Saints down 6-1 in the fifth Breland Almadova and Hanson both singled with one out. With two outs Thomas hit a grounder to second that Brian Bistagne threw away at first allowing two runs to score and making it 6-3.

Bistagne made up for the mistake in the bottom of the inning when he knocked in a run with a single to make it 7-3.

A three-run homer by Devon Rodriguez in the sixth, his first of the season, made it 10-3. Straka went 6.0 innings allowing 10 runs, one shy of the franchise record set by three pitchers, on 12 hits while walking two and striking out seven.

The same two teams meet in the second game of the three game series on Tuesday night at Potter County Memorial Stadium at 7:05 p.m. The Saints send RHP Alec Crawford (1-1, 6.08) to the mound against AirHogs RHP Palmer Betts (1-1, 3.64). The game can be heard on Club 1220 KLBB.
