WINGNUTS BROOM T-BONES

The Wichita Wingnuts finished off a sweep of their abbreviated series with the Kansas City T-Bones Thursday, knocking off the visitors 6-4 in a matinee at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. Kanas City took the lead three batters in, as Jake Blackwood hit a two-run shot. Wichita answered with two of their own in the home half, as Dustin Geiger and Richard Prigatano put together back-to-back two-out knocks to tie the score. The home team then took the lead in the second. First, Brent Clevlen walked with the bases loaded to put the Wingnuts in front, and T.J. Mittelstaedt followed with a two-run single to give him a team-leading 22 RBIs on the season. Kansas City pulled within a run with single tallies in the fourth and fifth innings, but were held off of the board by the quartet of Jesse Pratt, Fabian Roman, Chad Nading and Frankie Reed over the final four innings. Wichita added an insurance run in the seventh, when Geiger collected his second RBI of the day. Wichita has now won eight of their last nine games, and is 5-0 against the Kansas City T-Bones this season.

WHAT A RELIEF

The Wichita bullpen got the job done in a big way on Thursday, as the relief quartet of Jesse Pratt, Fabian Roman, Chad Nading and Frankie Reed combined to throw four scoreless innings, allowing four hits, no walks, and striking our four. Pratt came on for the sixth and allowed two hits, but got out of trouble by inducing a double play ball. Roman came on and retired the T-Bones in order in the seventh. It was Nading's turn in the eighth, and he allowed a pair of hits, but wiggled out of trouble by striking out Tyler Massey. Reed then came on for the ninth and closed it down, striking out a pair while retiring Kansas City in order to lock down his fourth save of 2016.

THE NEW GUY ON THE BLOCK

Veteran right-hander Ryan Kussmaul was signed by Wichita Friday and will make his Wingnuts debut on the hill against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks tonight. The 29-year old spent five seasons in the Chicago White Sox organization, reaching Triple-A Charlotte in 2012 and 2014. Last year, Kussmaul saved 26 games for the Long Island Ducks of the Atlantic League.
