Wichita Wingnuts News Release
WICHITA, Kans. - The Wichita Wingnuts fell behind early and could not recover, falling 5-2 in eight innings to the Winnipeg Goldeyes in their exhibition finale Tuesday afternoon at Lawrence Dumont Stadium.
The Goldeyes opened the scoring just three batters into the game. After drawing a walk to lead off the frame, Maikol Gonzalez was at third with one out for Reggie Abercrombie, who brought him home with a sacrifice fly into foul territory.
Winnipeg added two more in the third, chasing Wingnuts starter Eddie Medina in the process. After retiring the first two, Medina surrendered four consecutive hits, with Abercrombie and Jacob Rogers collecting RBIs to put the visitors in front 3-0.
Wichita (1-2-2) picked up their first tally in the fourth. Richard Prigatano was hit by a pitch with one out, and after a hit and a Winnipeg error, the outfielder came around to bring the Wingnuts back within a pair.
The Wingnuts then drew within a run in the fifth. Christian Stringer and Zack Cox strung together back-to-back doubles to start the inning to make it a 3-2 game, but Wichita could not tie it up, despite getting the potential tying run to third with less than two outs.
The visitors tacked on a pair of insurance runs against Andrew Taylor and the Wichita bullpen in the sixth. Ridge Hoopii-Haslam drove in a run with a RBI single, then scored later on a wild pitch to push the Goldeyes lead to three.
With Tuesday's contest in the books, the Wingnuts have completed their five game exhibition slate, finishing with one win, two losses, and two ties. Wichita will announce their Opening Day roster on Wednesday, and then open up the 2016 regular season on Thursday night against the Lincoln Saltodgs at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. and the game can be heard on 1410 AM KGSO, as well as on TuneIn.
