St. Paul Saints News Release

ST. PAUL, MN - It won't show up on any stats or even be a home run anyone remembers when the 2016 season comes to an end, but for Alonzo Harris he hopes it's the beginning of an incredible season. Harris crushed a three-run walk-off home run to send the St. Paul Saints to a 5-4 victory over the Sioux Falls Canaries at CHS Field in front of 4,934 in the final exhibition game of the season.

In the ninth with the Saints trailing 4-2 Mike Gilmartin and Tanner Vavra walked to start off the inning. With one out Harris stepped to the plate. He hit a hanging breaking ball over the left field wall for the game winner.

The Saints got their first look at their newest starter, John Straka, who came over in a trade with the Sioux City Explorers on Monday. Straka was strong going 5.0 innings allowing two runs on seven hits while walking one and striking out five. He gave up both runs in the second on an infield single by Ozney Guillen followed by a double from Frank Martinez. An RBI groundout from Ethan Chapman and an RBI single by Cameron Garfield gave the Canaries a 2-0 lead.

The Saints answered in the third when Tony Caldwell hit his second home run of the spring, a solo shot to right-center to make it 2-1. With two outs Breland Almadova singled and Willie Argo doubled him home tying the game at two. Almadova finished the game 3-3 with a run scored.

The Canaries tacked on two runs against Saints reliever Chris Peacock in the sixth and seventh innings. In the sixth the Canaries loaded the bases on a Jerome Pena single and back-to-back walks. A double play scored Pena to make it 3-2.

In the seventh a leadoff walk to Chapman proved costly as he stole second, moved to third on a ground out and scored on a sacrifice fly from Blake Schmit to make it 4-2.

The Saints open the 2016 season on Thursday, May 19 at 7:05 p.m. against the Gary SouthShore Railcats. Opening Day is presented by CHS. The game can be heard on Club 1220 KLBB and on the Saints Cable Network, cable access channels in the Twin Cities Area.
