Wingnuts Complete Sweep of Laredo

WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts (26-14) beat the Laredo Lemurs (22-17) 5-3 at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Wednesday night.
Colt Loehrs broke a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the eighth with a towering, two-out, two-run home run to left field. C.J. Ziegler opened the inning with a walk against Lemurs' reliever Mike Benacka. Benacka struck out the next two hitters before Loehrs came through with his first home run of the season.
Harrison Kain led off the top of the ninth with a walk against Wingnuts' closer Josh Dew. David Amberson made a diving catch in shallow right field to rob John Allen for the first out. On the next pitch, Kain was caught stealing at second base for the second out of the inning. After John Alonso blooped a single to left-center, Dew retired Palmer Karr Jr. on a soft groundball back to the mound to earn his seventh save of the year.
The win helped the Wingnuts finish a three-game sweep in which they outscored the Lemurs 35-11. Wichita never trailed at any point in 27 innings, and clubbed nine home runs to Laredo's two.
Wichita scored two runs in the bottom of the second to take an early lead for a third straight night. C.J. Ziegler beat out an infield single on a groundball at shortstop. Brent Clevlen followed with a two-run homer off the batter's eye in center field.
Wichita made it 3-0 in the third. Three walks helped the Wingnuts load the bases with one out. Abel Nieves scored from third on Clevlen's sacrifice fly to left.
Allen hit a two-out, two-run double down the left field line in the top of the seventh to get the Lemurs on the board. Brian Peterson hit a two-run homer in the top of the eighth to tie the game.
Daniel Bennett earned the win in relief for the Wingnuts. Benacka suffered the loss.
Junior Guerra started for the Wingnuts and took a no-decision. Guerra allowed one earned run on four hits over seven innings. Guerra walked five and struck out six.
Fabian Williamson started for the Lemurs and also took a no-decision, allowing three earned runs on four hits in five and two-thirds innings. Williamson walked five and struck out two.
Nieves singled up the middle in the bottom of the fourth to extend his hitting streak to 19 games. Nieves is now just one game shy of tying Josh Horn for the longest streak in team history. Clevlen has homered in four consecutive games, tying his own team record set in 2011.
