
Sox Dominate Again

AMARILLO, TX - The Sox overpower the Diablos 10-4 in three hours and twenty one minutes at Amarillo National Bank Sox Stadium in front of 1,111 fans. Joe Newby gets his second win of the season as Joe Testa earns his first save. Amarillo's offense bats twelve times in the fifth inning to score seven runs during their route of El Paso.
There were more strikeouts and walks combined for both sides than outs recorded in the field of play. Maikol Gonzalez led off the game with a walk and would score the Diablos' first run on a Jonathon Cisneros groundout. In the bottom of the first, Chris Valencia's double tied the game after KC Serna walked to start the inning. The Sox took a 2-1 lead in the third with an RBI from Joe Weik who finished with two runs batted in. Another run scored in the fourth when Cory Patton scored via sacrifice fly to center by Serna.
Amarillo scored seven runs on six hits and an error in the fifth to extend their lead to nine. Runs were batted in by Chris Grossman, two for Trey Ford's triple, one for Adam DeLaGarza, one for Serna's double, and another by Weik; a single for the seventh run. The Sox threatened in the sixth with two in scoring position before a strikeout and a groundout ended the inning.
Joe Testa came in relief for the Sox and allowed a run in the seventh by a Jose Garcia single up the middle. Testa pitched a scoreless eighth but allowed two in the ninth, including a triple, single, and double respectively. Devin Thaut picked up an RBI and Cisneros drove in his second of the game. El Paso's shortstop, Maikol Gonzalez scored three of the Diablos' four runs, drawing three walks and reaching base in all five plate appearances. The relief staff for El Paso allowed no runs in the seventh and eighth innings.
Joe Newby (W, 2-3) went six innings and gave up one run on four hits while walking six and striking out eight. Michael Joyce (L, 1-1) allowed six runs on seven hits with six walks and four strikeouts through four and two-thirds innings pitched. Kevin Cooper pitched an inning and a third for El Paso, giving up four runs, two earned on four hits with three walks and two strikeouts. Hector Contin and Miguel Chacoa each pitched an inning and combined for no runs allowed on two hits with a walk for Contin and a strikeout for Chacoa. Joe Testa (S,1) gave up three earned runs on six hits with a walk and four strikeouts in three innings pitched.
With the win, the Sox improve to 24-14, while the Diablos fall to 10-29 on the season. Thursday, the Sox host the El Paso Diablos for the finale of a five-game series. The game is set to begin at 7:05pm with the Aqua One Pre-Game Show at 6:55pm on Ustream via www.amarillosox.com. Game time is tentative and is subject to blackout.
