Winds of change blow for Windy City Wes

The Winnipeg Goldeyes had barely returned home this morning from a seven-game road trip and manager Hal Lanier was already making a big change.

Lanier announced today the release of outfielder Wes Chamberlain. One of six Goldeyes to play in each of the team's 30 games, Chamberlain's .190 batting average was the worst on the team, as was his .263 on-base percentage.

Voted last year to the All-Goldeyes Team, Chamberlain returned to Winnipeg with a career .349 average in a Goldeyes uniform. He started off well, hitting safely in the team's first seven games, producing a .414 average. But his production quickly diminished, as did his batting average, plummeting more than 200 percentage points in 26 days.

For the year, Chamberlain was .190 with four home runs and 17 runs batted in. He also hit into a league-high nine double plays.

Chamberlain's replacement is expected in Winnipeg later this week. The team opens a seven-game homestand on Wednesday against Joliet, whom they will host for four games before welcoming South Division-leading Schaumburg for three games.
