Peoria Rivermen News Release
After a high-scoring affair against the Charlotte Checkers last night, the Peoria Rivermen battled to a 2-1 loss, ending their six-game winning streak Friday night at Time Warner Cable Arena. Adam Cracknell scored his fifth goal of the season in the second period for Peoria's lone score.
Charlotte picked up the game's first goal in a hurry by scoring only 1:58 into the game. Jerome Samson walked into the zone and ripped a shot of Jake Allen's glove for his sixth goal of the season. Zach Boychuk and Brett Bellemore earned assists on the Checkers' fifth goal in 15:11of game play against the Rivermen - stretching back to last night's game.
However, it didn't take long for the Rivermen to respond. Ian Cole fired a shot from the blue line that hit Cracknell and bounced to the low slot. In Charlotte's attempt to clear the puck, it ricocheted off one of their players into the back of the net to tie the game at 7:56.
Brett Sutter regained the lead for the Checkers as he stole the puck from behind the net from Allen and was able wrap the puck into the empty net. Sutter's unassisted goal gave Charlotte a 2-1 lead only 1:08 into the second period.
Both teams were unable to take full advantage of their power plays in the second period. The Rivermen lost their powerplay due to a T.J. Hensick slashing penalty with 47 seconds remaining on the advantage. When the Checkers were set to begin their abbreviated man advantage, Rasmus Rissanen earned an interference penalty.
The third period brought no scoring, although the Rivermen outshot Charlotte 7-6 in the frame. Sergei Andronov was hit with a hooking penalty with 3:11 remaining in the game, and T.J. Hensick earned his second consecutive game misconduct for abuse of officials in the last second of the game.
The Rivermen outshot Charlotte 29-24 as both teams finished 0-for-3 on the power play.
The Rivermen continue their four-game road swing after the Christmas break as they travel to Milwaukee to take on the Admirals on Thursday at 7 p.m. All games can be heard on CD Country 107.9 FM or online through www.rivermen.net.
