Win Streak Comes to Crashing Halt
(Grand Junction, CO) - The Owlz (21-35) got off to a quick start but saw their six game winning streak come to an end, losing 11-2 to the Grand Junction Rockies (27-28) on Saturday night at Suplizio Field.
Jeremiah Jackson continued his power surege, giving the Owlz an early lead in the first inning. On the very first pitch of the game, Jackson smacked a solo home run to give the Owlz a 1-0 lead. The home run was Jackson's fourth in his last five at-bats.
The Owlz added to their lead in the second inning. Jose Verrier started the inning with a double and then moved to third on a sacrifice bunt laid down by David Clawson. After a Brandon White walk, Verrier came home to score on an errant pick off throw, extending the Owlz lead to 2-0.
Grand Junction took the lead in the third inning. With one out, Owlz starter Matt Leon walked back-to-back hitters and then the Rockies scored thier first run of the game on a Bladimir Restituyo groundout. Ezequil Tovar then tied the game with a triple. Julio Carreras gave the Rockies a 3-2 lead with a single to center. The Rockies added another run on an Owlz error to push the lead to 4-2.
The Rockies added another run in the fourth inning. Brenton Doyle doubled for the second time in the game and then scored when Owen Taylor doubled to left, extending the lead to 5-2. The Rockies went on to score one more in the sixth inning and then put up a five spot in the seventh, highlighted by a Brenton Doyle two-run homer.
Rockies' starter Jared Horn (2-0) eanred the win while Matt Leon (3-3) was charged with the loss. The Owlz and the Rockies will continue the series on Sunday night at 5:00. Kelvin Moncion will make the start for the Owlz against Andrew Quezada for Grand Junction.
