San Jose Giants News Release

MODESTO - The Giants collected 14 hits and used a solid seven-inning start from Joe Biagini to earn an 8-2 victory over the Modesto Nuts on Wednesday evening at John Thurman Field. San Jose never trailed and broke open a close game with a four-run top of the ninth en route to their season-high tying fifth straight win.

Chuckie Jones (4-for-5, 2 2B, SB) had four hits, including a pair of doubles, to lead the offensive attack. Blake Miller (2-for-4, 3 RBI) and Alberto Robles (2-for-5, 3 RBI, SB) added two hits and three RBI's apiece while Brian Ragira (1-for-4, HR, 2 RBI) smacked his seventh home run of the season.

Biagini (5-5) limited Modesto to a pair of runs on five hits during his stint on the mound to pick-up the win. The right-hander walked one and struck out five.

The Giants jumped out early with a run in the top of the first as Jones singled with one out to start the rally before stealing second. After Mitch Delfino grounded out, Miller ripped a single into left plating Jones with the first run of the night.

Ragira extended the lead to 2-0 with a towering solo home run to left in the top of the fourth. In the fifth, Jesus Galindo led off with a double before Jones singled. Two batters later, Miller lifted a sacrifice fly to right bringing home Galindo to make it 3-0.

Meanwhile, Biagini began his start with four scoreless innings. After a leadoff double in the first off the bat of Rosell Herrera, Biagini didn't allow another hit until Derek Jones began the bottom of the fifth with a double. Sean Dwyer followed the Jones hit with a single before Kyle Von Tungeln brought home Modesto's first run with a groundout to second.

The Nuts further cut into the San Jose lead in the bottom of the sixth as Pat Valaika led off with a single, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on Jordan Ribera's one-out single. Biagini though recovered inducing the next hitter, Dean Espy, to ground into an inning-ending 4-6-3 double play.

Biagini returned to the mound in the bottom of the seventh and promptly worked a perfect inning to maintain the 3-2 Giants advantage.

San Jose extended their lead in the top of the eighth with a single run. With one out, Ben Turner singled before Brandon Bednar dropped down a bunt. On the play, however, the Modesto third baseman Espy threw wildly to first for an error. The misplay allowed Turner to advance into third while Bednar moved to second. Elliott Blair followed with a grounder to shortstop that saw Turner thrown out at the plate, but then Robles singled up the middle plating Bednar to make it 4-2.

After Bryce Bandilla (1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 SO) threw a scoreless bottom of the eighth, the Giants erupted in the ninth. Jones led off with an opposite-field double off the wall in right before Delfino singled to put runners on the corners. Miller then singled to center to score Jones with the first run of the inning. Ragira followed with a sacrifice fly extending the lead to 6-2. With two outs, the rally continued when Bednar reached on another throwing error committed by Espy at third before a walk to Blair loaded the bases. Robles then stepped to the plate and again delivered a clutch two-out single up the middle as two more runs scored for an 8-2 advantage.

Ryan Bradley (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO) finished the game for San Jose with a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth.

Nuts starter Ben Alsup (0-9) suffered the loss after yielding four runs (three earned) on nine hits over 7 1/3 innings. Alsup struck out three and walked none.
