Wilmington Sharks News Release
"The Coastal Plain League has closely monitored the COVID-19 announcements of the Federal, State and Local authorities in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia and has delayed the league's 2020 season start until July 1.
Depending on governmental guidance, teams may begin to form in mid-June to prepare for the season and may play some exhibition games in June. It is expected that this schedule will allow the league's teams and host cities to properly prepare to give the fans and the country's finest collegiate baseball players a safe and enjoyable environment. We look forward to an exciting 2020 baseball season."
In line with the Coastal Plain League's new start date of July 1st , the Wilmington Sharks adjusted schedule will feature 21 home games and 21 road games spanning July 1st to August 15th. The new schedule will be released in the coming weeks. Sharks fans can look forward to their favorite promotions this summer at Buck Hardee Field.
"On top of the staple Thirsty Thursdays, Friday Night Fireworks shows, and Saturday Night Giveaways, we're also putting together a few fundraising efforts for those in our community who have been affected by COVID-19", says Wilmington Sharks General Manager Carson Bowen.
"We're continuing to have conversations with local health officials about what it will take for us to safely hold events at the ballpark this summer", Bowen adds. "Thankfully we have time to continue to explore the situation, and our team is eager to make baseball a reality this summer. "We're really looking forward to the opportunity to be a safe place for our community to gather with friends, family, and neighbors to make new memories this summer."
"This is one of the most anticipated collegiate summer baseball seasons of all time. I think we've got a really talented group this year. We've recruited some top talent from the top programs all over the country", says Sharks Head Coach Russ Burroughs. "We have a lot of diversity that will mesh really well together. These guys are fired up and ready to win some baseball games."
