Williams Improves to 4-0; Edenton Unbeaten by Wilmington

EDENTON, N.C - Josh Hampton and Trent Miller provided the offense and John Williams pitched six innings of one-run baseball as the Edenton Steamers (29-9, 9-3) improved to 7-0 against the Wilmington Sharks (22-20, 8-7) with a 3-1 victory on Monday Night at Historic Hicks Field.

Williams (George Mason University) made his fourth start and ninth appearance overall for the Steamers while DJ Thomas made his fourth start for the Sharks.

Josh Hampton (Wilmington University) cracked the score board for Edenton in the bottom of fourth inning with his sixth home run of the season, a solo shot that gave Edenton a 1-0 lead.

In the top of the fifth Tyler Slaton connected for his first home run of the season to knot the game at 1-1. For Williams that was the first run he had given up in his last 13 innings pitched on the mound and only the second hit.

Edenton, in the bottom of the fifth, added two more runs when Chase Harris (University of New Mexico) reached on an infield single and Laz Villa (Reedley College) reached on an infield single. Trent Miller (Middle Tennessee State University) knocked them both in with a double for a 3-1 lead.

Williams pitched six innings allowing one run on four hits; he did not issue a walk while striking out five and improving to 4-0 on the season.

Thomas, for the Sharks, pitched five innings and allowed three runs on nine hits; he walked one and struck out three, taking his first loss of the season, falling to 2-1.

In the bottom of the sixth the rain began to fall, the tarp was pulled out and put on the field and an hour and six minute rain delay ensued.

Jeremy Bales (Lee University) came out and pitched a scoreless seventh inning, followed by a scoreless inning for Andrew Nelson (St. Catharine College) and finally Jake McCoy (College of the Desert) came out and closed out the 3-1 win for the Steamers, earning his eighth save of the season.

Edenton has an off day today and the Wilson Tobs come to town tomorrow night. It will mark the first time in the second half the Tobs and Steamers will face off.
