Sharks Come from Behind to Beat Marlins at Home

Wilmington, N.C. - The Wilmington Sharks (9-7, 23-20) came from behind down 2-0 in the bottom of the ninth to pick up a 3-2 victory over the Morehead City Marlins (9-7, 21-23) at home on Tuesday night.

The Morehead City Marlins started off first as they picked up a run on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Ryan Muno in the top of the second inning to take a 1-0 lead. The Marlins extended their lead in the top of the eighth on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Dylan Brown to score Dalton Britt to give them a 2-0 lead. Cole Billingsley tried to score on a ball hit to Tyler Slaton that he caught in the same inning with one out, but a perfect throw on a line to TJ Losby at home kept another run off the board as the led 2-0 after eight.

The Sharks trailed 2-0 in the bottom of the ninth inning as TJ Losby led off and was hit by a pitch and then moved to second on a ground out. Mike Dunster reached on a walk with one out to put runners on first and second.

Calvin Rayburn came out of the game as he was the starting pitcher for the Marlins. Brandon Saunders came in for the save opportunity to face Zach MacAneney who reached safely on an infield hit to load the bases. Andrew Amaro hit a ball right at Saunders, but he could not glove it and Losby scored to make it 2-1 with one out. An off speed pitch got away from Saunders while facing Alex Freedman that allowed Dunster to score to tie the game at 2-2. Freedman was walked to load the bases to face Cody Dolan. Saunders threw another pitch that went to the backstop that allowed MacAneney to score and gave the Sharks a big 3-2 win.

Rayburn threw a great game as he gave up one run on seven hits and struck out six. Tyler Bolton started for the Sharks tossing seven innings and gave up two runs on three hits and struck out eight. Will Shepley picked up the win in two innings of relief and moves to 2-0 on the year.

The Wilmington Sharks will take on the Gastonia Grizzlies at home on Wednesday night with a 7:05 p.m. first pitch.

The Wilmington Sharks are a proud member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 17th season in 2013, the CPL features 14 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. Furthermore, the CPL has had over 1000 alumni drafted and 62 alums - including 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner Justin Verlander - make their major league debut so far.
