Blowfish Set Strikeout Record in Win Over Tobs

WILSON, N.C. - On a balmy Tuesday night the (7-3) second half Columbia Blowfish traveled north into North Carolina to take on the (7-7) second half Wilson Tobs.

Columbia struck the Tobs early in the top of the first with a leadoff home run from Blowfish shortstop Michael Wilson (Francis Marion).

Wilson answered back in the bottom of the second with a lead off triple from Tobs center fielder, Nick Regnier (Central Michigan), following was Tobs first baseman, Jimmy Luppens (Canisius) homering to leftfield, putting the Tobs on top of the Blowfish 2-to-1 heading into the top of the third.

The Blowfish started swimming back into the picture with one run in the fifth with a leadoff triple from Micheal Wilson. Blowfish designated hitter, Eros Modena (Bethune-Cookman), sent a SAC fly into centerfield scoring Wilson, making it a tie ball game at two.

The Tobs stretched the game out again with a run in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI double from Nick Regnier.

The Blowfish would not be satisfied with trailing any longer as the fish posted a four spot in the eighth and two more in the ninth.

The Blowfish went on to beat the Tobs by a score of 8-to-3.

The starter for the Blowfish Tuesday night was right-hander Josh Knab (South Carolina), throwing three innings, giving up two runs off of three hits, two walks, and nine strikeouts. Alex Carrasco (Florida A&M) came on in relief in the fourth, tossing three innings giving up no runs off of three hits, no walks, and five strikeouts. The third and final Blowfish pitcher on the night was Derrick Smith (College of Charleston), hurling the final three frames, giving up one run, off of three hits, no walks, and eight strikeouts.

Starter for the Tobs Tuesday night was Bobby Gazzola (Reinhardt University), tossing 6.1 innings giving up two runs off of four hits, three walks, and four strikeouts. Tobs would bring in middle reliever Christian Slazinik (Eastern Illinois), coming in for just two thirds of an inning, giving up two runs off of three hits, no walks and a strikeout. TJ Varicola (Averett University) came in giving up two runs off of two hits, no walks, and no strikeouts and was relieved by Blake Myers (Memphis). Myers came in and threw for just the eighth inning, giving up no runs, no hits, no walks, and two strikeouts. The final Tobs pitcher to toe the rubber Tuesday was Zack Lee (North Carolina Central), tossing the ninth inning giving up two runs off of two hits, two walks, and no strikeouts.

The Blowfish are now (8-3) in the second half of the season sitting in first place of the Western Standings of the Coastal Plain League.

The Columbia Blowfish will be back in action at home next Wednesday night July 24th hosting the Martinsville Mustangs with first pitch set for 7:05pm. Gates open at 6:00pm. It's also Wed Wednesday! You can get two Natty or Busch Light cans for $3 from 6-8pm!
