The Lexington Legends will welcome the "Final Six" to Whitaker Bank Ballpark Friday, January 8.

The competition involves six groups of fifth-grade students from William Wells Brown Elementary School in Lexington who have been developing ideas for a promotional item to be given away to fans at a Legends home game during the 2016 season.

After making a visit to the ballpark last fall, students from three classes, working in teams as part of an economics unit, were asked to generate ideas for a Legends giveaway. Students conducted research, designed products, and then created and conducted surveys of other students, faculty and administrators to get their reactions.

Finalists - two groups from each of the three classes - were determined by a vote of students after oral presentations were made at the school. Knee-high socks, miniature multi-colored baseball bats, slap bracelets and sunglasses are among the finalists' ideas.

The finalists will make presentations Friday from 9:30-11:30 a.m. in the Barney Miller Executive Boardroom at Whitaker Bank Ballpark. The format will be similar to the reality television program "Shark Tank," on which a panel of judges hears the ideas of would-be entrepreneurs and then determines which are worthy of their support. Friday's panel will be made up of Legends employees and representatives of other organizations and businesses in the community.

"We are so excited to be partnering with the William Wells Brown fifth grade class to create a giveaway item," said Legends Director of Community Relations Rebecca Barnes. "The staff and students have put forth such a great effort with this project. We are definitely looking forward to seeing their final ideas."
