Wildcats Take Rivalry Cup

MONCTON, NB - The Saint John Sea Dogs dropped a 6-1 decision to the Moncton Wildcats as Moncton gathered all six points they need to capture the Brunswick News Rivalry Cup. The win, along with a sold out Moncton Coliseum for Wednesday's Quebec Major Junior Hockey League game, gave them the six points for the series trophy.

Brett Malone had the lone goal for the Sea Dogs. Sebastien Auger stopped 40 of 46 shots in the loss. Saint John falls to 23-42-1-0 on the year.

Yannick Veilleux had a hat-trick and an assist to lead the offense for the Wildcats. Christophe Lalonde had two markers and an assist while Alex Saulnier had four assists and Philip Danault had three. Stephen Johnson also scored for Moncton. Cole Holowenko stopped 17 of 18 as the Wildcats climbed to 41-22-2-1.

Moncton came out strong and fast in the opening frame, scoring three times in the first 20 minutes, including two with the man advantage.

Johnson opened the scoring at 6:49. Just 1:10 later, Veilleux scored his first of two in the frame with the Wildcats a man up. His second marker and the goal that made it 3-0 came at 18:26 of the first, also a power play marker.

Shots in the first were 14-6 for the Wildcats in the opening stanza.

Lalonde's first of the frame came on a short-handed penalty shot attempt at 3:16 of the middle period.

The second period saw the Sea Dogs start to bounce back and Malone scored his fifth of the season to make it 4-1 at 3:57.

A couple of big hits saw the Sea Dogs start to bounce back physically as well. Maxime Villemaire flattened Wildcats forward Conor Garland with a check and a size mismatch. Olivier LeBlanc then got in on the hitting, giving Wildcats trade-deadline-acquisition Danault a bone-jarring body check that knocked the Wildcat forward off his skates.

The Wildcats had another power play marker at 14:51 as Lalonde scored his second of the contest and making it 5-1 Moncton.

Moncton scored early in the third as well to make it 6-1. Veilleux's hat-trick goal came at 3:17.

The final score would be 6-1 Wildcats. The win gave them their 3rdBrunswick News Rivalry Cup title and retakes the cup after a two-year Sea Dogs reign.
