Saint John Sea Dogs News Release
The Moncton Wildcats (4-4-0-0) slipped past the Saint John Sea Dogs (2-4-2-1) 3-1 on Wednesday night at the Avenir Centre, scoring an empty net goal to ice the game. This was the first meeting between the two teams this season.
Noah Patenaude made his third straight start for Saint John. He was opposite Dakota Lund-Cornish in net for Moncton.
Saint John were without defencemen Hunter Gartley and Benjamin Roode, and forward Alex Drover (healthy scratches).
A scoreless first period was dominated by the Sea Dogs until back-to-back penalties shifted the shot lead in favor of the Wildcats, 13-9.
Moncton got on the board in the second period just seconds into a Sea Dogs powerplay. Gabriel Fortier was able to strip the puck as Saint John exited their own zone and beat Patenaude at 11:10. Five minutes later Jacob Stewart made it 2-0 Moncton. The Sea Dogs outshot the Wildcats 19-7 in the second period but couldn't solve Lund-Cornish.
Midway through the third period Saint John got on the scoreboard when Dawson Stairs scored on the power play at 11:40. Joshua Roy and Jérémie Poirier had assists on the goal and are first and second respectively in team scoring this season, Roy 10 and Poirier seven. The Sea Dogs had the opportunity to tie it late when Moncton was called for too many men with under three minutes to go. Patenaude was pulled during the power play to make it 6-on-4 but they were unable to convert. Moncton added an empty netter with four seconds to play and sealed the game.
