Moncton Wildcats News Release
MONCTON N.B. - The Moncton Wildcats made four transactions this afternoon during the final day of the 2016-2017 QMJHL trade period. The Moncton Wildcats organization remains committed to the process of building a championship team, and have taken the steps during this trade period to ensure we have the correct platform to build for the future. The following is a list of trades Moncton has made today: - Lane Cormier to the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies, for a 2nd round pick in 2017 and Anthony Wojcik - Kody Gagnon and a 5th round pick in 2018 to Chicoutimi, in exchange for a 3rd round in 2018 - Moncton acquired Bradley Kennedy from Halifax, in exchange for a 9th round pick in 2018 - Moncton acquired Maxim Baillargeon from Cape Breton in exchange for a 7th round in 2019 The Moncton Wildcats have traded Captain Lane Cormier to the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies in exchange for a 2nd round pick in the 2017 QMJHL Entry Draft, as well as forward Anthony Wojcik. Our 19-year-old captain was in his third season with the Wildcats, appearing in 141 games, recording 35 points and 304 penalty minutes. Born in Pictou County NS, Lane has been an instrumental part of the team both on and off the ice, and he will be missed by all here in Moncton. We wish Lane nothing but the best as he will join former teammate Manuel Wiederer, and the reigning President's Cup championship team. Along with the second round pick in 2017, we have also acquired 18-year-old forward Anthony Wojcik. Drafted by the Charlottetown Islanders in 2014, he was acquired by the Huskies that same year during the trade period. He was part of the Presidents Cup winning team last year and has been in the lineup for 30 games so far this season. "This was a difficult decision for us; all trades are tough but this one may have possibly been the toughest," said Director of Hockey Operations, Roger Shannon. "Lane has been a warrior for our team, and has been one of our strongest leaders. You win with guys like Lane, and I credit a lot of our success over the past two seasons to him. Unfortunately, during this process of building a championship team no one is untouchable; we have to look at the whole team and make decisions that will help us in this process moving forward. We made sure that this was going to be a good return for us, to gain a second round pick and a player in Anthony was the correct combination for us. Anthony is the guy in Quebec that those teams don't like to play against, so we look forward to welcoming him to Moncton." We would like to sincerely thank Lane for his time here in Moncton and his tremendous leadership and wish him nothing but the best in Rouyn! Defenceman Kody Gagnon, along with a fifth round pick in 2018 has been traded to the Chicoutimi Saguenéens, for a third round pick in the 2018 QMJHL Draft. Moncton acquired Kody earlier this season in October. Prior to his transition to the QMJHL Kody was with the Barrie Colts of the OHL. Since arriving in Moncton the 20-year-old has appeared in the lineup for 28 games recording 10 points. "We want to wish Kody all the best in Chicoutimi. When we brought him in earlier this season we needed a steady defenceman, and he was able to provide that for us," said Director of Hockey Operations, Roger Shannon. "He came a long way and has achieved what he wanted to, proving that he can play for a contending team, when the opportunity came up for him to go to Chicoutimi I was glad we were able to make that happen." He will now join former Wildcats Kevin and Kelly Klima with the Saguenéens. During our trade with Halifax today we have acquired forward Bradley Kennedy in exchange for a 9th round pick in the 2018 draft. This 20-year-old was in his first season with the Halifax Mooseheads, prior to that he was with the Charlottetown Islanders for three seasons. Playing 195 games in an Islanders uniform he was able to post 114 points. He has also had a successful first half of the season so far in Halifax, registering 29 points in 37 games. Bradley will play in tonight's game vs. the Halifax Mooseheads at Scotiabank Centre. "We had a vacancy in the 20-year-old position and felt as though Bradley would be a good fit for us. He is a very good player, and is a goal scorer," said Director of Hockey Operations, Roger Shannon. "He is a big presence on the ice and will be a good first line guy for us. With four years experience in the league he will also be good for all of our younger players, helping to guide them along." Our final trade of the day was with the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles. We traded a 7th round draft pick in 2019 to Cape Breton, for defenceman Maxim Baillargeon. The 19-year-old Quebec native is in his second full season in the team after being drafted by them in 2013. "When we moved Kody today and moved up with our picks it made sense for us to replace him with a similar kind of player, and the deal with Cape Breton today came at the perfect time for us," said Director of Hockey Operations, Roger Shannon. "He will be a good asset for us; he is a big guy and will add some more experience to our defensive group." With these four final transactions that concludes the 2016-2017 QMJHL trade period for the Wildcats. "Our objective coming into this was to follow the process we had set, and acquire the correct assets for us to have the platform to build our championship team. We have done that through the picks that we have acquired, as well as the good young players we have brought in. When you are committed to building a championship team there is no going half way, and we as an organization were all fully committed to make sure that we acquired the best possible assets for us to use moving forward," said Director of Hockey Operations, Roger Shannon.
