South Georgia Wildcats News Release

ALBANY, GA- The South Georgia Wildcats held off a late-game charge by the Florida Firecats to win 59-50 in Estero, Florida and advance to the second round next week. With the win, the Wildcats improve their overall record to 11-6, and the Firecats finished the season with an 11-6 record and the South Division Championship.

The Wildcats led the game at one point by 30 points, but the Firecats, no strangers to post-season play, made a heroic comeback by scoring 27 unanswered points in the 3rd period and in the 4th pulled to within 2 with just minutes left in the game. D. Bryant hit Chavis McCollister with the game-saving score to extend the ‘Cats' lead to 9 late in the fourth period.

This is the first playoff victory for the franchise since their move to Albany in 2005. The last time the Wildcats won a playoff game was August 7, 2004 when the Cape Fear Wildcats defeated the Birmingham Steeldogs 54-53 in the first round. This win also marks the only time the Wildcats have ever beaten Florida three times in a row. The series is now tied at 6 apiece.

"This is undoubtedly a great win for this team and the fans back in Albany" said General Manger Darren McPhail. "We're one step closer to our goal of a championship. These guys fought hard all game long and would not be denied."

The Wildcats will travel to Tulsa, Oklahoma to challenge the Tulsa Talons, winners of the first round against the Oklahoma City Yard Dogs 65-27. The Wildcats closed the regular season with a loss to the Talons on July 28 by a final score of 64-54.
