Wild Wins Third Straight

RIO RANCHO, N.M. - TheWenatchee Wild defeated the New Mexico Mustangs in a shootout Tuesday at theSanta Ana Star Center, 3-2. The win was the Wild's third straight.

Shawn Pauly (Bellingham,Wash.) gave the Wild the lead 7:32 into the first frame. After an extended stayin the New Mexico zone, Tyler Hope (McKinney,Texas) cycled the puck to defenseman HunterBrown (Huntsville, Ala.) whose shot from the far point was redirected intothe cage by Pauly. New Mexico evened the score less than four minutes beforethe first intermission when Zach Badalamenti whistled a hard shot into the netfrom inside the far circle. Rob Heath and James Poston assisted.

The Wild reclaimed the lead, 2-1, 3:57 into the secondstanza during its first power-play opportunity of the game. The power-play unitquickly set up shop after a faceoff win the offensive zone, leading to Max McHugh's (Edgewood, Wash.) passfrom the goal line to D.J. Vandercook(Farmington Hills, Mich.), who buried a shot from the slot. Carl-Johan Sjogren (Tumba, Sweden)picked up the second assist on the sequence.

Badalamenti delivered a big goal for the Mustangs, scoringfrom the near circle with 3:46 remaining in regulation, to force overtime. EliRiddle assisted.

After a scoreless overtime session, Wenatchee outscored theMustangs 2-0 in the shootout. Vandercook, the first shooter in the session,beat New Mexico goalie Marco Wieser 5-hole. Pauly, the fourth shooter, addedanother tally with a backhander. Wild goalie Brandon Jaeger (Champlin, Minn.) denied all four shooters that hefaced in the shootout.

In addition to shutting out the Mustangs in the shootout,Jaeger made 14 saves on 16 shots in regulation and overtime to record his 24thwin of the season. Wieser made 21 saves on 23 shots. Wenatchee scored onepower-play goal on three chances while New Mexico went 0-for-2 on theman-advantage.

The Wild (32-20-3) will try to sweep the Mustangs onWednesday. Faceoff is set for 6:30 p.m. (PT).
