Wenatchee Wild News Release
WENATCHEE, Wash. - The Wenatchee Wild took an early 2-goal lead Friday night and went on to defeat the Dawson Creek Rage, 4-2, at the Town Toyota Center. It was the Wild's second consecutive win over the Rage, one night after claiming an 8-0 victory.
The Wild took advantage of its first power-play opportunity of the night. Defenseman Chris Rumble (Chesapeake, Va.), who is riding a major hot streak, scored the power-play marker 6:48 into the first period on a shot from above the near circle. It was Rumble's ninth point in the last seven games. Zach Frye (Spokane, Wash.) assisted. Zachary Wallace (Burbank, Calif.) put the Wild up by a pair of goals near the midpoint of the frame on a wrist shot after D.J. Vandercook (Farmington Hills, Mich.) set him up in the high slot. Eric Johnson (Madison, Wis.) earned the second assist.
Vandercook increased Wenatchee's lead to 3-0 with 9:30 remaining in the second period when he put back a rebound in the slot off Frye's shot from the blue line. Michael Di Puma (Chicago, Ill.) was credited with the second assist. However, Dawson Creek scored its first goal of the series 11 seconds later on Kevin Swales' marker to trail the Wild 3-1 heading into the third period.
The Rage clawed its way to within a goal when Sam Waterfield scored from the near point at the 6:54 mark of the final period. The Wild kept the Rage from tying up the contest down the stretch, and Evan Schmidbauer (Surrey, BC) tacked on an empty-net goal with one second left in the game. Brennen Parker (Villa Park, Calif.) and Kyle Huson (Parker, Colo.) assisted.
Wild netminder Marcus Zelzer (Bay, Wis.), who made 18 saves on 20 shots, increased his record to 3-2. Rage goalie Edward Dyson stopped 32-of-35 shots. Wenatchee struggled on the power play (1-for-12) after Rumble's first-period man-advantage goal. Dawson Creek went 0-for-5 on the power play.
Vandercook, who has 12 points (5G, 7A) in 11 games, led the Wild with a goal and an assist. Frye added two assists to increase his points total to 17 (5G, 12A).
The Wild (12-5-0), which maintained sole possession of first place in the West Division with tonight's win, will try to sweep the Rage tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. All season ticket holders and Kids Klub members are invited to take part in a post-game skate with the Wild after tomorrow's contest.
