Texas Tornado News Release
It wasn't easy, but winning streaks rarely are. Behind a goal and assist from Jackson Leef and Donald Olivieri and 29 saves from Jimmy Kruger the Texas Tornado defeated the New Mexico Mustangs 3-1 on Saturday night. The win was the 12th in a row for Texas, who now lead the entire NAHL with 14 wins and 31 points.
The Mustangs played their best hockey of the weekend in the opening period, outshooting the Tornado 11-10 in the opening 20 minutes, but thanks to some key saves from Jimmy Kruger for Texas and Steve Bolton for the Mustangs, the period finished scoreless.
The 2nd period saw the Tornado get on the board first thanks to a nice individual effort from Jackson Leef who deked out Bolton and slipped the puck in front for an open Marc Biggs who smashed home his 7th goal of the season into the open net for a 1-0 Tornado lead. The rest of the period was all Kruger as he kept the Mustangs at bay and scoreless through two periods.
The Tornado regained some breathing room in the 3rd period thanks to a power play goal from Donald Olivieri as he bombed a patented slapshot from the point that beat Bolton over the shoulder. David Rigatti and Rock Einersen both picked up assists on the play. New Mexico would not die however as Ian McGilvrey spoiled Kruger's shutout with a goal past a screened Kruger to make it 2-1. But, the Tornado would put the game out of reach thanks to Jackson Leef who scored his 9th of the season with a little more than four minutes remaining in the game with assists to Rigatti and Jack Prince. The Tornado would hang on for the win in front of the largest crowd of the season at the Dr Pepper Arena in Frisco.
