Washington, Pa. - The Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, announced today that they have signed Blake Ochoa, a catcher with six years experience with the Florida Marlins and Seattle Mariners organizations, including a stint at the AAA level last year.
Ochoa, a 25-year-old native of Maracay, Venezuela, split the 2010 season between Tacoma of the Pacific Coast League (AAA), High Desert of the California League (A-Advanced) and Clinton of the Midwest League (A). Combined, he batted .285 last year with 39 hits, nine homeruns, 25 runs and 32 RBI in 43 games.
Over the course of his six-year minor league career, Ochoa has batted .263 and collected 240 hits, 24 homeruns, 109 runs and 134 RBI in 299 games. His best season came in 2009 with Clinton, when he batted .318 with 55 hits, nine doubles, two triples, five homeruns, 25 runs and 31 RBI in 54 games.
Darin Everson, field manager and director of baseball operations for the Wild Things, worked with Ochoa in the Marlins organization and cited his improvement each year. "We are very excited to sign Blake. He will bring a lot of experience and leadership to our team," he said. "With his years of experience, he has the potential to be an impact guy for us in many different ways."
